Not just for the Hendrix archivist, this book sheds important light on Hendrix the man, Hendrix the musical genius, Hendrix the wounded soul, Hendrix before he was "Jimi", and the people and events around him. For this, I find Black Gold perhaps more insightful than even one of the better biographies. The research into Hendrix before his discovery is most interesting and it points out how important Jimi's years as sideman to Chitlin' Circuit acts to his development as guitarist. This book also covers in detail Hendrix' time spent working in and around NYC. Most of this insight comes by way of interviews with Hendrix' fellow musicians, much from Noel Redding, studio people, management people, lovers. Although the biographic content was most interesting to me, the main thrust of this book is about the many recordings made of Hendrix that fall outside "official" label recordings. Roby painstakingly sorts out these rumors and claims and, in boldface, tells us their current status. Although this archival-type stuff could be boring, it is woven into a very compelling text, always with a story or anecdote behind the "lost" recording, and is anything but boring. Also interesting to note is that this book is a work in progress and could be updated and reissued as more information surfaces, and as more people discover and/or let go of their stored recordings. A revealing look into the the (at the time) unreleased tape archives of Hendrix. Highly recommended!!!

I like to read about the history of Jimi Hendrix and Black Gold had a reputation of being revealing about Jimi,s background and told of music that he never got to release and all the complications he had with his management which stopped him from being allowed his creative freedom and how he was driven to exhaustion by gruelling tours to procur more money for his projects, hence careless drug dependancy and his death.Very interesting.i,ve only read part of this book now and it is hard to put down, well written. There are other books about Jimi but this is one of the best.caulk52
