Smokin Aces is a fast paces raucous ride through the interactions of numerous hitmen as they make their way to beautiful Las Vegas to kill Buddy 'Aces' Israel. Their worlds collide in a blaze of gunfire and insanity as the assasins all converge on the target at roughly the same time getting caught in each other's wake. The cast is great including Ryan Reynolds who finally gets some decent screen time in a serious role even though he had to grow a beard to try to get people to take him seriously after Van Wilder. Jeremy Piven does a superb job as Buddy 'Aces' Israel aka The Target. Few people have strung out down to an art form like Pivens. Other highlights include Ben Affleck getting shot and Jason Bateman cross-dressing. Is there a downside? Yes. The Director/Writer has very limited experience and it shows. I'm not quite sure how he pulled this cast together but I'm guessing he knew somebody at the studio who called in some favors. The movie jumps around alot, there's not much character depth, and the spin ending is spun too far in a pre-big-screen tarantino-esque fashion.Read full review
The movie centers around the exploits of several assassins all trying to take out a strung out mob informant (jeremy piven) for a million dollar bounty. The FBI of course is trying to stop this from happening and uses its best two agents o try and get to him first(Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta). Now this film may look like a wild shootout action film which it is in certain parts, but instead of going ahead with all out adrenaline rushing action the director decided to throw in dozens of shallow plot twists that will make your head spin and often times when a crazy action scene is about to begin the shot will cut to a character you really wont care about then cut back just in time to see the final shot fired. Overall this movie could have been so much better with its elite cast and extremely intriguing characters, but because the filmmaker decided to go for drama and plot twists the film becomes an good action-drama instead of one of the best action films in years.Read full review
Not horrible, but seems more like deleted scenes from a good Tarantino or Ritchie film. Characters get quickly introduced and then BAM - dead! Hard to care about the deaths of a character you just met, and that's the whole problem with this movie. I never cared about anybody in it. Ryan Reynolds is way out of his acting league and Ray Liotta seems a tad bored playing Narc, Jr. Some funny stuff (the wacky skinheads have a few moments, the lady hitmen have a few moments) and lots of completely over the top violence that still needs a semblance of realism to enjoy. But bullets are flying from every angle and I got lost as to who was trying to kill and why. The "twist" ending can be seen from miles away, so the climax has no juice either.
“F.B.I.! F.B.I.!” Blam blam blam blam. “[Expletive]. [Expletive].” Blam blam blam. Spurt of blood. Plot twist. “F.B.I.! F.B.I.!” “[Expletive].” Blam blam blam blam blam. “[Expletive].” “F.B.I.!” “Hotel Security!” Blam. Exploding skull. Guy sits on a chain saw. Montage. [Expletive]. Plot twist. Roll credits. Yes, I condensed a bit, and I’m sorry if I spoiled anything, but the above is a fair summary of Joe Carnahan’s “Smokin’ Aces,” a Viagra suppository for compulsive action fetishists and a movie that strikes the chord of action. If you want guns ablazing, Give this one a try.
Set in Lake Tahoe with Vegas mobsters (how can you not love this movie already?), this movie is definately not for people looking for a nice, calm movie to watch before going to church on a Sunday morning. This ain't no chick flick. While it would have been nice to have a car chase or two thrown into the mix, there are enough bullets flying in this one to even make Quentin Tarantino wonder why he has held back in his movies. You'll see some old pros (such as Andy Garcia and Ray Liotta) and yep, that really is Alicia Keys playing a great part. This movie is a freaking blast. Get it. Enjoy it. This isn't one to take home to Mama...unless Mama is packing an Uzi.
