I became a fan of Robert Downey Jr. shortly after seeing him in this part as Chaplain when this movie was first released. He gives a brilliant performance and the movie helps to define the Real Chaplain in a way that we can appreciate his brilliance today too. I just bought a copy of the new Pixar movie Wall-e and the director talks about how he watched Chaplain movies to learn how to create a non-verbal language that can form a character that touches audiences. This movie shows old hollywood and young America as it was developing the movie art form and trying to get through the depression and into the war with Germany and Hitler. Robert Downey Jr does an excellent job, the story is true and well written, and the look of the movie is pleasing. The bonus features include the director talking about how, where, when, and why he made the film which is also a great piece of education and entertainment. The DVD was very inexpensive and top quality--delivered swiftly after ordering.Read full review
I have occasionally had doubts about the validity of "Anniversary Editions" and any benefit they have. Studying film in college, I loved this movie to begin with. The autobiography and other books this screenplay was based on make this almost a documentary. Downey Jr. does an Oscar-worthy performance. The supporting cast is almost a who's-who in Hollywood. The bonuses were a great treat. The ONLY bonus I would have would be to get a request from the Oscar TV committee to allow the presentation of Chaplin's lifetime achievement award to be additional footage. My selfishness in this request is trivial as opposed to the movie, quality of the bonus footage, and the improved packaging. This film will always be a top pick of mine for the script, costuming, makeup, and performance.
Excellent movie about the life of a brilliant actor. Would have loved to see this movie in an extended version to see more of his life in Hollywood. Robert Downey Jr. is incredible in his portrayal of Chaplin. Heartfelt and tough, Downey portrays the character as we have never seen him.

"Chaplin" is a great movie, true or not true and I don't care what drugs Robert Downey Jr. was on when he made it. Downey captured Chaplin. Sir Richard did a better job directing "Chaplin" than he did with "A Chorus Line". It was wonderful to see the family of Charlie in the moving picture. I remember the Academy Awards when Charlie accepted the honor. I don't think many people remember what a genius he really was and a goldmine to the motion picture industry. The movie takes you back to a begone era and the beginning of the star-system. If you are a movie fan, you'll want to add "Chaplin" to your collection.
Loved this movie with Robert Downey Jr. He was Charlie Chaplin through and through, even with the little tramp's walk. I thought the other actors in the film including Kevin Klein and Diane Lane were marvelous in it also but Downey's portrail of Chaplin was spot on. No-one could have done this movie better. Will watch over and over again now that I have it.
