A far cry from the 1984 adaptation this version was less than faithful to Stephen Kings original release, the director made the choice of setting the stage for the movie in September 1975 after the Vietnam War and also to cast Burt as a Vietnam Vet and Vicki as an anti war protester go figure out how they got married? First off, He who walks behind the rows appears as a few corn stalks rustling in the wind, unlike in the original where you get a dark and imposing whirlwind with a distinct evil voice that permeates out of it, and also the corn stalks in the field parting just like Moses when he parted the Red Sea, second Isaac who appears as the deranged cult leader was much more convincing in the original film than this version, third Burt (David Anders) and Vicki (Kandyse McClure) spent most of the time they had left together arguing and quarreling to a point where I found myself screaming at the TV saying Vicki will you just come on and stand by your man instead of knocking him down, at least in the original you knew they cared about each other and they worked together to get out of the mess they were in, forth the children in this film were stiff and rigid I got no feeling of fear that they were a real threat like I did in the original where at times I could feel the tension that they were closing in, I did get a little of that out of Malachai (Danial Newman) but not as much as I did in the original version, the next horror flick he appears in, he has to work alot harder putting on the so called; Scary Face, if he wants the viewers to jump! Fifth the children in the original film looked alot like real cornhusker farmers from the breadbasket of America, unlike in this movie the kids look like they were shanghaied out of an Amish Mennonite community then thrown in front of a camera and explicitly told what to say and what to do instead of how to actually act! I will close with this, if you are a fan of the original version like I am you will not like this movie very much it has potential at times and I was entertained but it just lacks good dialogue, but if you never seen the original version this movie may be a fun film to view.Read full review
I recommend this movie for fans of the original CHILDREN OF THE CORN. It is interesting to watch both and compare them. According to the bonus material, the director stuck closer to Stephen King's story with this version, in which the main characters are not a happily married couple, but a bickering couple on the verge of divorce. The problem, for me, is that it seemed likely they would kill each other before they even met the Children of the Corn...and they were so unpleasant, I really didn't care if, when, or how they died. As for the murderous children, the cult leader, Isaac, was too little and cute to be scary. I understand the concept (THE BAD SEED), but there was nothing frightening or charismatic about this Isaac (unlike the actor who played Isaac in the original version), so it seemed odd that all these older, bigger kids would follow him. And how come twelve years went by and all the Gatlin kids got older, but Isaac didn't? This wasn't even addressed, let alone explained. The explicit sex scene in the church, with all the kids watching, seemed like porn. The kids dressed like Amish people, not Nebraska corn farmers. In the original version, He Who Walks Behind The Rows was revealed as a supernatural creature; here, it is more ambiguous: is the evil really supernatural, or simply religious fanaticism run amok? Humans ---- even children --- are capable of evil deeds without demonic prompting, and I think this was the point of King's story. However, it's hard to enjoy a movie where none of the characters, including the alleged heroes, have any redeeming qualities at all.Read full review
Very well done. The actors were great & the suspense was captivating. Makes you wonder how the children of a town could conceive a plan to take over & kill all the adults. It was like Jonestown, Guiana for munchkins & Issac was Jimmy Jones. A psychopathic leader can be anyone anywhere, they just need followers & insanity follows.
