First, let me say that this is *not* a review of Roger Zelazny's novel series, but the Amber Diceless Roleplaying Game set in that game-world. In this game, you play characters from Amber (or Chaos), a classic fantasy style realm where you are various nobles and royals. Adventures revolve around the politics, magic, battles, and intrigue of this realm; where the nobles have the ability to travel to unlimited alternate dimensions called Shadows, with different tech levels, residents, and as varied as you can immagine. Amber Diceless roleplaying is an excellent game on all fronts. It's dice-less, storytelling mechanic is backed up by a point-buy system and an enjoyable "attribute auction" character creation process that balances out the game nicely while keeping it's story-telling mechanics open to the GM and players. It's the first game I've played where character creation can be competative and fun. While not recommended for "number crunchers" or non-stop hack-and-slash style games, the mechanics work great for mature groups looking to have fun and tell a good well-rounded story. Set in the rich Amber Universe, the players have phenomial powers that allow anyone to make a character to his/her liking, from a classical political dilettante to a sci-fi swashbucking rogue. All characters are super-human in every way, and possess incredible powers and abilities in one area of another. The game setting can take the players to an infinite number of realities, so for those looking for more than a standard fantasy setting can find whatever they wish. The game mechanics support all this, allowing players to not only have mystic abilities themselves, but construct powerful equipment of any types, have control over their own entire world of their own creation, or get a number of other specialized powers. I also recommend the game for those who have never read the Amber novel series; though having one or two members of your group who have would be ideal, especiall the GM. I myself have never read them, but the book provides ample setting material to explain the universe it takes place in. The incredible flexability in stories and settings also means that you don't need to follow any more of the novel stories than the basic setting and characters, all of which are detailed in this book. For those familiar with the Amber novels, and want more information on the Merlin Chronicles, I also recommend Shadow Knight, the first and only supplament for this product. Though out of print and difficult to find, this is an excellent game for those groups looking for something different. It's well illustrated, easy to read, and though softcover, a good value if you can find it for near cover-price. Great book whether you're a gamer or just a fan of the series.
