Xenogears introduces one of the most unique play style ever. The storyline had a very great theme in it. If you've never heard about this game back in 1998, but have played the other Xeno game, "Xenosaga" for the PS2 then you have to try and get this game. You may even love it more than saga. For the storyline, if you've played saga then it's pretty much the same, it focuses on mankind and an alternate being, I think it was Uudo in saga and the one in gears was more like an alien lifeform called Deus, and their struggles with the Zohar. In both games the characters use mech's or giant robots to battle the enemy and also play a role in the main storyline due to the Anima Relics used in the mechs. Also the theme is very religious to the bible. I will not get into more details and spoil everything for the people who has not played this game. Battle system: There exists two battle choices-either using characters or their mechs. character battle-the character battle in xenogears is one of the best turn based battle system in most of the turn based battle system RPG's ever. It took out the command select menu of attack for the button combination attack to perform the character's deathblows. The basic of it is that the Triangle, Square, and X buttons are the main usage for attack, there is a select combination to perform and the character has several deathblows that will please the player throughout the game. There also exist's magic elements called ether, their usage is to damage the enemy with elements of nature and can hit multiple enemies too. There exist an AP gauge that can be built up to 24 points and can be used to combine the character's normal deathblows together and damage the enemy with a fast combination of your own choosing. Mech battles: You can also use the character's preferred mech in combat known as Gears. The Gears battle is similar to the character style with the same button combination, but also exists a fuel gauge(like gas for a car). Gears battle their exist level 0, 1, 2, and 3 attacks. You first start off with the level 0 with only one attack with either of the buttons mentioned before, for Triangle being level 1, Square 2, and X being 3. After the first phase when it's that certain character's turn again his gear's level of attack will increase, which will allow him to combine two button for the next attack. With each time of level 0 attack then the level of the next attack increases. With a higher level of attack the stronger the gear's combination attack will be, but also uses more fuel. This game is a very good one, but also due to the very bad english voice acting(for not expanding the dialogue of the characters so when the character's mouth moves then the voice comes out and the voice end when the mouth stops moving). Due to this it seems really weird to see the character's saying "That's right, I'm a coward! and still see the character's mouth moving. The problem of the is that the japanese language differs greatly from the english because of this it is harder to actually say what the character are saying, which this means that their english dialogue needs to be expanded. Overall it is a very good game. If Xenosaga is enjoyable, then this one is way more.Read full review
Xenogears. A great plotline. Arguably one of the greatest RPG's, let alone any PS1 RPG. At least according to me. It's also an uncommon game, in which most used games cost $40-100. The plot line consists of an orphaned boy, left in a village, in which after about 20 minutes of the game, you will learn that the game takes drastic changes. Not only does the game consist of anime cutscenes, it also has great battle layout, as well as many plot twists, and enough annoyances of such to jerk your brain. The cons of the game are small but enough do drive someone away. It is a very long game. After sidequests my first playthrough, it came to roughly 96 hours. Not only that, the second disc is very plain, consisting of only 10 hours of the gameplay. The graphics are rather horrendous too, because of the fact it's a 1997 produced game. All in all though, the game itself is great. Pros-great battling, plotline, cutscenes, mini-quests, mini-games. Cons- Time consumed playing, lack of content in second disc, cost. I rate this a 8/10. Thanks for reading.Read full review
I have been searching for this game since 2011 and haven't had any luck. Peices were too high and case was cracked, missing the 2nd disc, or just incomplete. Until, finally I found it good condition and everything was like brand new and in a really good price. Now I'm playing this game endlessly.

The reason I first became interested in Xenogears was a referral from a friend. He RAVED about it. At first i thought he was nuts, but now I'M the one who's obsessed with Xenogears! A truly well-balanced role-playing game. The story takes you to places you've never thought possible! If you like anime, then you'd LOVE Xenogears! Speckled throughout the story and text are fully animated videos, as if you're actually playing one of your favorite anime movies! And lets not forget the fun factor. Xenogears has martial arts-based battles with possible combos that can dispose of your toughest bosses in one shot! If executed correctly, you can do your favorite combo after combo after combo for maximum damage. And then there's the Gear Battles, when you're piloting gigantic meca and beating the snot out of the bad guys! PSOne and PS2 compatable gameplay (but you cannot load your saved games from your PSOne memory card to your PS2, and for some odd reason you can't save your game progress on the PS2 memory card. So, if you want to save AND load your game, then you have to use the PS or PSOne console...sorry)Read full review
Xenogears holds a spot in the hearts of millions of people across the world. This game starts off with a boy named Fei Fong Wong finding himself in the middle of a conflict. I would reveal more but I dont want to spoil anything for you. The battle system is top notch both on land and in Mechs. You start off in a side view and you can press different combinations of buttons to start your attacks, new attacks come in frequently so it is a nice way to keep the battle system fresh for much longer than most RPGs. The story in this game though is the main attraction. The story is fast paced and full of many different character and events. One of the biggest drawbacks of this game though is the 2nd disc. It goes from the constant combat and story of the 1st disc to a story book mode for the 2nd disc. You will press X most of the time in the 2nd disc so be warned. But fortunaly the 2nd disc lasts only around 5 hours which is fine. This game is definalty a classic RPG and a very good one at that. You can expect to find around 60-70 hours of playtime in this game so it is definatly worth the money.Read full review
Thank you! I've been waiting a long time to actually give this classic a go! Good condition and Strategy guide also good!

A long, compelling story with memorable characters and a plot that constantly twists and turns. some of the best game art ever done by Square Enix, in my opinion. The soundtrack is excellent, even getting rereleased in a special album where they re recorded the music with an orchestra. The turn based battle system is done very well, this game has challenging battles that will test you to overcome. An older title that somehow surpasses not only most other RPGs but just most modern games in general, as you will be hard pressed to find a more thought provoking story from a game that's actually worth the time and effort to invest into it.

From the 'Silver' RPG Era of Squaresoft[Currently known as: SquareEnix] comes a -literal- passion project: "Xenogears". This is very first in the installment of the "Xeno" series. Though "Xenoblade" is currently being developed by MonolithSoft Studios in Kyoto, Japan. Xenogears, was developed at Square just after the successful launch of Final Fantasy 7. The story is as original and as -meaty- as they come. With well over 60 hours of game play inside of 2-discs, this is a MUST play for the RPG fan. This game has Full Motion Video [FMV] done in an anime style, then some cut scenes are done in engine with different higher production models. Which is something pretty unique coming from one of Sqaures earlier RPGs which use only high production valued FMVs and no anime cut scenes[the latter which were produced by Production I.G.]. It features Active Time Battle[ATB], and a Mecha ATB battle system. Yes, you fight enemies inside of giant robots in certain portions of the game. The game has a very complex combo section for both the Mecha fights and NPC fights. The music is one of a kind, and carries the story's atmosphere pretty perfectly. Since dialog and long cut scenes will keep the player reading for more then 20 minutes at a time. Stay away from this game if you need to be given a sense of direction. This game offers little to no hand holding when it comes to instructions on where to proceed to next. That ability is left up to you. There is only a compass and no map showing you where your next objective is. So paying attention to dialog is a must. Be warned that due to the age of the game some 3D dungeons building structures look very much the same as the next hallway. So getting through some of the late game puzzles will prove very challenging without the use of the internet. 9.5/10 Game, would recommend to anyone who has the time on their hands to sit through and play through this masterpiece!Read full review

Xenogears has one of the best stories that I have ever seen from a console RPG. Hands down the story is well thought of. And virtually every main character is a memorable one. Even the villians seem to have a quality that brings them to mind. Unfortunately, for a small portion of the game, the player is forced into dungeon after dungeon. I, personally, think this takes away from the story. But it doesn't do enough harm to make you forget about the story, only think of the story up to this point fondly. In my opinion, Xenogears is one of the best RPGs ever made.
