I know the Hitchcock version so very well and I loved the way Rebecca was never seen and yet absolutely present. The viewer imagined her beauty individually. I loved the way the new Mrs. de Winter grew up gradually first standing up to her employer ever so slightly in telling her to leave or she'd miss her ship then standing up to Mrs. Danvers in telling her to get rid of Rebecca's things and so on. This version did more than imply Rebecca yet still not showing her entire face. While somewhat less effective at first in fact as more of her appeared she became less goddess-like and more human. The new Mrs. de Winter grew up as well in this version but in a much more subtle way. As she became to really understand Danvers she resented her less and had the more compassionate attitude of an adult. Instead of standing up to Danvers she began to stand up more and more to the most important person in her life Max...actually far more powerful. Loved both versions.Read full review
A very handsome version of Daphne Du Maurier's famous novel of the same name. It follows the book very closely, more so than Hitchcock's version. Extremely well cast, although at first I thought Charles Dance was a bit too old to be playing opposite Amelia Fox. However, he has a definite edge that gives him sex appeal and is completely believable as moody and unpredictable Max De Winter. I was also struck by his similarity (especially his voice) to another fine actor, George Sanders. The pacing and casting of this Masterpiece Theater version is excellent, and the scenery is exquisite! A beautiful film to look at. Great for those cold winter evenings when you need a moody mystery to entertain you.
I have seen other versions of this book and I truly enjoyed this one with Charles Dance and Emilia Fox. Diana Rigg did an excellent, 'Danvers', and gave her a bit more of a sympathetic nature. I would definitely recommend this version.
