A Christmas Story is a great comedy. Darren McGavin is the wonderfully eccentric father. Melinda Dillon plays his loving and understanding wife. But Peter Billingsley, whose portrayal of Ralphie, steals the show. Ralphie is dying for a Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. But everyone, even Santa Claus tells him he'll shoot his eye out. Everyone's childhood memories of the season all rolled up somewhere within this wonderful film.
I have been a huge fan of this film since I was a child. It's also special because the that's supposed to be taking place in Chicago is actually Cleveland. 😀 It's funny they call street Cleveland St to make up for it. The house Ralphie's family lives in is now a city landmark. The movie is excellent not just because it's so funny but that it shows you a glimpse of old-fashioned holiday tradition. Forget Computers & cell phones they didn't even have TV's yet. The cast could not of been better picked. The leg lamp , BB gun and pink bunny outfit will for ever a part of holiday entertainment. ☺
Classic movie and kid friendly. The whole family can enjoy it. Sentimental and funny. It's the only Christmas movie I truly enjoy. It takes me back in time.
i am one of many who love this movie especially because darren mcgavin plays the dad. the movie is nostalgic as i can remember christmas shopping with my parents when i was a kid and left to see santa in the same kind of depatrment store. and so many more nostalgic things about this movie! well acted. the narrative is wonderful by the author jean shepherd. the movie is based upon his short stories some of which are found in his book IN GOD WE TRUST ALL OTHERS PAY CASH. and yes i'm one of those fans who watches the movie marathon every christmas eve.
These DVDs, in particular the first make, are classic Christmas stories in their own right. I did feel the first one was the better of the two, the second one appeared more for older-aged children and adults. Glad to have them in my collection.
