Very interesting action science fiction, great role by William Hurt, impressive spfx, even by today's standards. Highly recommended, but for mature audiences only, lots of nudity.

Chayevsky's concepts regarding the ever present primitive baggage we carry is fascinating in itself. But the movie puts too much emphasis on the "horror" aspects rather than the behaviorial psychology aspects. This could and should have been a more psychological thriller rather than a weak horror film.

I saw Altered States the first time at my first year at college in 1981 and I was really thrilled to see this at the on campus cinema. I can not completely express how indelible an impression it made upon me back then, even though I wasn't really around people that used drugs or was tripping. The idea of tripping on LSD and psychotropic drugs was totally beyond my comprehension. The whole thing about tripping is still interesting concept to me to say the least. William Hurt could easily be labeled the greatest psycho-naut Harvard psych professor in film since he comes up with this absolutely brilliant idea to combine sensory deprivation with entheogenic and hallucinogenic substances in the name of pure research and have a totally cool chic go along for the journey. At that time and age, we were all just awe-struck by this film. Exploring the depths of the mind is a concept most people back then would only dream about. Nowadays, nobody even thinks anything about it, since we have this kind of stuff walking up on us in the convenience store and going off on the cashier. Oh well, I guess I stuck around long enough to see happen it first hand for myself. Blair Brown was absolutely fabulous in this film and could easily be able to win awards based upon her pouting smirk, but I'll just have to reserve the right to save this thought for the next smartest actress in Hollywood, which I haven't seen anyone that could really top her style in this film in 30 years. So, I guess I'm just the lucky as an older film critic these days. Check this film out or you don't know anything about film whatsoever. 5/5 for ultimate intrigue and virtuous experimental therapy upon humans. Since it's first release, this movie was destined to be a "cult classic". If it doesn't make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, then you are probably a psychotic yourselves! The writing keeps you spellbound and the movie manages to capture that spirit throughout. Just try imagining something within the realm of believe-ability that scares the socks off of you and this movie hits the spot. But hey, this is only one man's opinion. I have watched this movie so many times, it should have warn off of me. Like Somewhere in Time", it has not and I am glad I own it-as a showing of respect for those who went to the trouble of producing such a captivating film. For those who are easily offended, there is some unfettered sex in it along with a bit of violence and some foul language, but most of it goes towards enhancing the overall worth of said story. Note: you may not end up liking the main character or his treatment of girlfriend/wife, but, again, it's all in your perspective. This film still creeps me out and NO...I have no desire to "De-differentiate myself" at all ;-)Read full review

This is a must see for any folks in the microbiology or genetics areas of endeavor. Sure it's fantasy and sure it could have been higher budgeted and sure you could have made it better however it just may strike a common chord. William Hurt is pretty good in his debut, playing the part of an aloof and driven (if slightly damaged) university researcher. Supporting roles are well played by both his genetic fall back as well as his support group. The final message may or may not be clear but it will certainly weigh on your thoughts, see it.
