A brief summary wouldn't do the film justice. When someone told me it was about a pilot, who is also a pig, I just didn't get it. I had no interest at all. Then I learned it was a Miyazaki film. Now it had my attention. And no one told me that the pig pilot was also a bounty hunter whose main target was air pirates! Okay, so it still sounds weird, but it really is a great film that I'll definitely be revisiting at some time. One of Miyazaki's earlier works, Porco Rosso surprised me with beautiful animation. I know I shouldn't underestimate any Miyazaki film, but the fact that this was one of his earlier(for me, anyway) works had me leery. There was no need for concern, though, as I never felt that the film seemed dated in any way. I usually watch my anime in the original Japanese audio, but decided that since it boasted 'extraordinary voice talents', I gave the English sound track a spin. It was okay, with the exception of the pig himself. Just sounded out of place for some reason. Can't quite place my finger on it. Other than that, though, the film is indeed extraordinary. Then again, when is a Miyazaki film not?Read full review
I own all of Miyazaki's films, but decided to purchase this film last thinking that a plot about a flying pig couldn't possibly be good. I should have known better. Miyazaki has a gift of creative and interesting storytelling. Porco Rosso is a fun, light hearted film about sea planes, but it also reaches pretty deep into the characters and their emotions. I won't give the movie away, but I would recommend that any Miyazaki fan check this film out, no matter how ridiculous the premise may sound. I was sure this would be my least favorite Studio Ghibli film, and it actually quickly became one of my top 3 favorites!
Considering this film released just before cgi took its place in the entertainment world, this is an excellent cel-based adventure! Great characters that you want to empathize with in a swash-buckling romp about honor and the occasional necessity of putting others first. Comical fight scenes, spectacular dogfights and all accompanied by a musical score that you'll want to (and can) buy. Beautiful art throughout, this is a film crying out for a cgi-remake - it'd be terrific! Great value for fans of aviation, adventure and animation! 5-Stars! A++ !

One of my grandson's recommended Porco Rosso to me. He was right. It is a delightful, engaging bit of great Japanese anime. This got me looking for more Miyazaki.

I am a fan of Studio Ghibli films, so I new what to expect going into this purchase. For those of you who have seen other Ghibli films this one will not be a let-down. It has all of the aspects that most of the other titles have, ie. good characters, good voice talent, abundant humor, and a good story with some form of a lesson. If you are not familiar with Studio Ghibli films I would suggest trying "Spirited Away", "Howls Moving Castle", or "Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind" first before this one, that way you can become acclimated to the style of film.
