I remember the debut of the Blues Bothers on Saturday Night Live. Much has been made of Jerome Bettis, the Pittsburgh Steeler running back, and the 2006 Super Bowl Champions. Many analysts note that Mr. Bettis has good feet. Meaning his articulate exploits are sponsored by his quick and agile peds. The same can be said for John Belushi. Both he and Elwood displayed from the first moment, that the Blues Brothers were not simply credible or entertaining. They had good feet. They could really dance. Look at the cover photo. These guys were good. Sharing this record with your children is good. Rubber Biscuit is good. So are all the songs on this must have collection. Today, 20 years past their inaugural appearance, Blues Brothers lore is steeped in the national countenance. Consider this excerpt from a small town News Chronicle 2/16/6 issue describing an ice hockey score. Names have been changed to protect the identity of Thing One and Thing Two. "In the first period, Pawling took an early 1-0 lead as Thing One did a tuck of the puck across the goal line, fed off a Thing Two ricochet biscuit. A ricochet biscuit is the kind shot that is supposed to bounce back off the goalie onto your stick. If it don't bounce back, you go hungry." This is a good hockey album in fact. Famously up tempo, inventive and a workout, The Blues Bothers Definitive Collection needs to be nearer your stereo. Any little child in your life needs to be stimulated cerebrally by the musings of Jake and Elwood as they hop, skip and dance to the blues. You will become ebullient knowing that it was you who learned the youngin' proper-like with this introduction to an American Blues classic.Read full review
This work remains one of the best examples of the creative adaptability of Akroyd and Belushi and clearly demonstrates Paul Schaeffer's talents in organizing a group of musicians. The Blues Brothers band was a gathering of a few of the era's most talented players dazzling us with some classic favorites such as Sam and Dave's "Soul Man", "Expressway To Your Heart", and songs of many other artists of the soul & R&B era of the mid to late 60's. Included in this compilation are songs from Their first release, "Briefcase Full Of Blues", "Made in the USA" and from the first Blues brothers movie. The choice of tracks for this album certainly showcases the talent of the band, however the only song I miss from their repetior is "Flip, Flop, Fly". Still, one would be remiss to pass up an opportunity to own this great album, no matter what your musical taste is.Read full review
I bought this years ago and took it to work to pump me up when the afternoon doldrums took over. My boss loved it so much he borrowed it for...a while. It came back, but then mysteriously disappeared. My boss denied any wrong doing, but he's still a prime suspect. Any way, not to worry, eBay provided me a source for a second time through this fun and upbeat CD. Belushi is not the best singer in the world, but he doesn't have to be. The session musicians in this group would make me sound good. But, Belushi and Akroyd provide the spark that pulls together this puzzle of contradictions. It is a MUST HAVE for everybody's collection, even if it is the only R&B/soul CD you own. Would I buy it again?? I just did!
I bought this cd because I came across the Blues Brothers on You Tube, the song Sweet Home Chicago, and I decided I had to have a cd that had that song on it. I of course remember John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd from SNL in the 70's and saw their movies, so I was very familiar with their music. I had just never bought one off their cd's, until now. It is very good, the other songs are enjoyable also. I am very glad I purchased this cd to make a long story short.
I bought this to share it with my 15 year old Son. He is a guitar player with classic rock and blues as his favorite styles. It brings back tons of memories. The only regret is that I never did and never will get to see Dan and John and the band together.
