Late '40s noir starring the late, great Robert Ryan as Stoker Thompson, a mediocre older boxer who's been booked for 1 more fight that his manager (played by George Tobias) has been bribed set up for him to lose to a young up and coming fighter. The problem is that Tobias never tells Ryan about the "set up" and Ryan manages to defeat the kid and...well, to tell any more would be a total spoiler. It's film noir at its best, with the boxing venue locker room for the fighters so sleazy that you can almost smell the sweat. Along with Tobias, the supporting cast has Percy Helton as Ryan's cut and corner man, Wallace Ford as the locker room man and Alan Baxter as the oily gangster/gambler with whom Tobias has made the "set up." Audrey Totter plays Ryan's long suffering wife who is begging him to quit fighting before he gets his brains scrambled and the film is set in real time: you can see a bank clock at the beginning and again at the end and the elapsed time of the movie is exactly the time that has passed in the movie. Robert Wise is the director, the man who also directed "West Side Story", "The Desert Rats", the brilliant "Executive Suite", and another boxing movie, "Somebody Up There Likes Me" among others. IMO, this has to rank as one of his best, though it's not as well known as most others. It's the 1940s, and one of the more memorable scenes, for me, is one where Audrey Totter stops at a greasy spoon grill, orders 2 hamburgers, a can of soup, and 2 bottles of beer and the total is $1.16, including 3 cents tax. It's not a lot of fun to watch but, it is brilliant in its intensity and it is quite memorable as, IMNSHO, Robert Ryan always gives a memorable performance. Just my $0.02.Read full review

Corruption in the low life seedy side of the boxing world. A has-been fighter can't win. Or can he. Excellant cast and acting by Robert Ryan.
