Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a tricky but harmless fast-talker. But he knows how to have fun, which is exactly what he sets out to do when he feigns illness and talks his parents into letting him stay home from school. From Wrigley Field to the Art Institute of Chicago to a Polish pride parade, Ferris and his friends make the most of their day off. Ferris's sister, Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), is determined to prove that Ferris is faking sick and make him pay for it, and the bumbling school dean, Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), is sure that Ferris is pulling a fast one. John Hughes has always had youths and their feelings in the front of his mind when he made many of his movies. This one is no exception. It has an unexpected hero who has yet to stand up to the bullies in his life, the best friend and his girlfriend who involve him in a day off from school he won't soon forget and many of Chicago's sights and sounds to take in. It also has a true bad guy who may sound well-meaning but is in fact out after Ferris and Co. just to ruin their lives not to get them back into school for a good education as well as a sister who concerns herself with everyone else's business but not her own.
