Neo Tokyo is a collection of 3 self-standing stories from some of the most popular anime directors of the 80s: Rintaro, Yoshiaki Kawajiri(Ninja Scroll), and Katshiro Otomo(Akira). When I heard about this movie, I literally did a backflip, and I landed it perfectly... Anyway after seeing it, I'm a bit disappointed on a few points, but at the same time, there are plenty of things I admire about Neo Tokyo. 1. LABRYNTH STORY(Rintaro): My favorite story of the three. A little girl is playing hide and seek with her cat and they fall through a mirror into another dimension. They end up in a psychedelic dream world, where they follow a circus clown through the eerie corridors of a maze. The imagery is FANTASTIC. I think Rintaro really let his mind run free with this little tale. The characters, colors, sounds and music, all flow nicely- Labrynth Story has a real unique atmosphere. 2. RUNNING MAN(Kawajiri): This one was the most disapointing of the three. I had high hopes for this one, because I haven't been able to find any good anime directed by Kawajiri beyond Ninja Scroll, which is a masterpiece, and Vampire Hunter D. Wicked City, Demon City: Shinjuku, and all of the ones Kawajiri did for the Animatrix... they're all garbage. So I was really hoping that Running Man would be closer to par for Kawajiri. Well it IS because its short and well animated, but at the same time, the plot is really lame, and there isn't enough good animation to compensate for that. There are a few sequences where Kawajiri's imagination peeks through, but for the most part, I thought this story was kind of stale. 3. Construction Cancellation Order(Otomo): This one is good. I have sort of the same issue with Otomo. The genius who visualized *Akira* just hasn't produced enough other work of that quality. Well this is no Akira, but I think its pretty good. The storyline is decent, and the art is really nice. CCO's style reminds me of Otomo's mangas. If you've ever looked through Akira(the manga) you'll see what I mean. Alot of the animation in this one (explosions, robots, etc.) is alot like comic art, which is by all means a good thing. CCO certainly has an atmosphere to it, which is just about enough to win me over. Neo Tokyo is a good movie. Don't expect Akira or Ninja Scroll from it, but its definitely worth seeing. -End Transmission-Read full review
this dvd is a compilation of 3 japanese animated shorts, the first is "labryinth" a creepy yet whimsically animated bit about a boy and his cat following a clown through a maze, the next is "running man" a limited animation set in the future following a reporter doing a piece on an undefeated racecar driver where you win by staying alive, the final is "the order to stop construction" probably my favortie both with the animation as well as story, a man is sent to shut down construction in the middle of a swamp which is being run by robots who are running the whole project into the ground. although the three shorts don't necessarily fit together that well they all stand alone as amazing artworks.
Dvd is of crisp sound and picture quality! Even better and mind blowing with surround sound! Perfect, perfect, perfect remastering of these 3 Japanimation classics. Superb art and animation. It just doesn't get any better than this. Even if you have never been a fan or even viewed Japanimation in the past, this Dvd will change your mind forever! Don't wait!.....Buy your copy of Neo-Tokyo today and prepare yourself for an eye popping and jaw dropping experience!!!
I got really interested in Neo Tokyo after hearing that three of my favorite Japanese animators (Rintaro, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and Katsuhiro Otomo) made this possible. I bought this on a whim and I don't regret it one bit!! Three animated shorts delving into different albeit interesting themes like an overactive imagination and over reliance on technology. Definitely a hidden treasure in the anime genre and if you find this for sale somewhere, don't hesitate to buy it at all!!
Great addition to the collection of any lover of old school anime!
