  • A Verdi opera from the second shelf

One of Verdi's lesser known operas, it suffers from a dated libretto. Subtitles (I watched those in English) are stiff and stuffy. The performance, except for the dramatically boring tenor, are quite good, and the orchestra is conducted brilliantly. The performance shows its age in its photography which is variable; it's especially poor for the ballet sections which were probably added to this score so that this opera could be staged at the Paris Opera when, in Verdi's time, every opera staged there required a ballet. The ballet sections are distant and out of focus; although the dancers are good; the choreography is indifferent.. I doubt that this performance will make converts to this long but often brilliant opera, but it's good if not memorable..
