Charles Laughton IS the Hunchback and no one has equalled him. And Maureen O'Hara is also the ONLY Esmeralda. Maureen made her debut at 17 two years earlier in Hitchcock's "Jamaica Inn" alongside Laughton. They have teamed again to make a memorable picture that will withstand the test of time. Set in the 1500's Paris complete with superstitions, torture devices and a hatred for foreigners--particularly gypsies, the young O'Hara sneaks through the gates of Paris and the powerful Archbishop of Notre Dame takes an unsavory fancy to her dancing despite his vows of chastity. He has raised the deformed bellringer Quasimodo and when she is falsely accused of the murder of a handsome King's guard and accused of witchcraft, it is the twisted, deaf Laughton with a heart of gold that gives her sanctuary in the great cathedral. Through a series of misunderstandings, the underbelly dregs of Paris storm the bastian where Laughton attempts to protect O'Hara. There is one touching scene when the lovely Maureen first steps into this magnificent edifice and who does not understand the Catholic religion and prayer to the Virgin to help her people while the congregation are pleading for avaristic an materialistic things. The only exemplifies her character that is innocent and pure of heart. This 1939 beauty is opulent and beautifully acted and directed. Laughton is flawless, as usual, and O'Hara's talent was developing rapidly since her first vehicle 2 years prior. Although she has appeared in some of Hollywood's all-time great motion pictures (The Miracle on 34th, Street, How Green Was My Valley and The Quiet man to name a few), she is still a vastly underrated actress. This motion picture should dispel any doubts. Many remakes have been made but all pale in comparison to this first talkie from the great Victor Hugo novel. Not to be missed for purists of film and movie buffs alike.Read full review

This is a story that touches the heart. Charles Laughton masterfully portrays the foundling hunchback. Maureen Sullivan is stunning as the beautiful gypsy, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke is the embodiment of evil. A beautiful production with masterful direction. Highly recommended.
