I know it's over 10 years old but wow. This is such a wonderful, eclectic holiday collection, with guest singers like Michael Buble (famously on "Elf's Lament") and Sarah McLauchlin ("We Three Kings"). BNL take some standards and make them their own, and they have created some superb originals. They are so incredibly gifted. This is really a cool cd to have in your holiday music collection along with Mariah Carey, Frank Sinatra, Wheezer, or Kelly Clarkson. Barenaked for the Holidays is most unique and entertaining. Even if it's just background music. Or even if it's not Christmas.

The Ladies are always right on the money and this is no exception. It is a far cry from their appeance on an Ann Murray Christmas special years ago. They do a lot of standard Christmas songs and carols. They even toss in a couple of Hanukkah tunes. The musicianship is tight as usual; Steven's vocals are amazing. One of the true gems on this CD is "Elf's Lament". It talks about the problems of being an elf in Sanata's workshop and would a great anthem for a union organizing effort at the North Pole. While the CD is terrific, even better is to see BNL's Christmas show. They do about 70 percent of their regualr stuff and 30 percent Christmas tunes. When I saw them, their opening band was The LeeVees, who did all Hanukkah stuff ... very funny. While Steven could sing a grocery list and sound amazing, he did a version of "Silent Night" that is nothing shy of operetic. Buy this CD, toss back a couple egg nogs and wait for the fat man to slip down the chimney. It's well worth it.Read full review
This is a marvelous collection of Christmas (and some Hanukkah) songs with quite a few originals thrown in as well. The first track starts off very serene and then turns into the most raucous version of 'Jingle Bells' you ever heard. 'Elf's Lament' is a wonderful Ed Robertson tune, featuring Michael Buble. 'Deck the Stills' is very clever and always puts a smile on my face. The disc concludes with the best version of 'Auld Land Syne' I've ever heard in my life. Any true BNL fan should love this album.
