Division Bell was released by Pink Floyd in 1994 and was the second release in the post Roger Waters 'less' band. It is also the last studio album released by Pink Floyd and one that really seemed to divide their fans. The album features eleven songs written mostly by David Gilmour and Richard Wright. The album went to number one in the United States and Great Britain but received only lukewarm reviews from critics. Before I go any farther let me say that I have been listening to Floyd since the seventies. I have all of the albums, US and Imports, have seen them in concert, and have also seen Roger Waters during his Pros and Cons tour. I like Floyd. I did not like this album however. To me this album sounded a lot like David Gilmour's solo album, About Face, which I liked. But some of the lyrics on Division Bell I just didn't get although I definitely got the impression that some shots were taken at Waters. Some of this sounded like Meddle, some riffs sounded like Final Cut, and I even felt like a little Dark Side was mixed in. But at the end of the day the music just sounded generic and every song kind of blended together. The only song that really jumped out at me was 'Take it Back' and to me it sounded like another song from Momentary Lapse of Reason. Division Bell certainly has an appeal but it will also leave you wanting more. However, at the price you can pick it up on E-Bay it's a great addition to any collection.Read full review
Hey Pink Floyd Rocks I love their live shows from 1987 til 1994. Pink Floyd puts on a great concert. Alot of their songs such as HIGH HOPES remind me of childhood ,of how good it was then .I can relate to COMING BACK TO LIFE and TAKE IT BACK . I'm sure alot of you could relate to these songs if you'd really listen to them . LOST FOR WORDS has some really good acoustic guitar . I have played guitar for many years and I believe David Gilmour is the best I've ever seen .He can play electric , classical and steel .If I had a choice , I'd want to play just like him . I'm always talking about PF and I try to get others to check them out. The four songs I mentioned are from DIVISION BELL . HIGH HOPES , COMING BACK TO LIFE and TAKE IT BACK are also on the PULSE dvd . Hey , if you are a Pink Floyd fan , You gotta see PULSE .... please ? Do yourself a favor . This release was not critically acclaimed. This release was in fact not completely accepted by old-school Floyd fans. This release is different than anything else the band had done up to its point (1994)...but for me, that was exactly the point, and reason why I like it so much. It is a very "mature" release, deals with loss, deals with introspective issues ie: "What do you want from me" "you can sell your soul for complete control, is that really what you need?" "you can lose your selfish pride, see inside, there is nothing to hide, turn and face the light". Yes, profound lyrics are the hallmark of Division Bell. I was lucky enough to see the band perform in the Ohio State University football stadium lovingly known as "The Shoe" during the tour that followed this years release and let me tell you, the band was great, this music is great and anyone who can't recognize that fact maybe should give it more of a chance and try to not compare it to anything that came before it.Read full review
"The Division Bell" sadly was Pink Floyd's last album, it has some flashbacks of past songs but not totally re-hashing them. David Gilmour once again in charge & he's done an excellent job. Athough the "old" Pink Floyd fans are still to this day are screaming foul, all in all it's a great album. The Eleven songs that are on this album were played on album rock radio in 1994, but all you hear now from this album is "Keep Talking". If you don't have this album or haven't heard it you must have been living under a rock or just don't care anymore. Give it a listen & I know you will come to love it just as I have. Richard Wright, Rest In Peace, you are missed big time !!
Still a die hard Roger fan, had to get this to complete my set. More of a Gilmore sounding album but I like that too. Any pink floyd is better than most of the music out there. In retrospect it all becomes clear.
