This is a hilarious movie that every one will enjoy, but it isn't for kids. Anyone who has ever been around minor league hockey teams and players, will attest to the term "Animals". These men are the poster children for "disfunctional". They curse, drink, and fight like the average man breathes, and the Charlestown Chiefs are no exception. A fifth rate minor league hockey team in the iron belt of America. It is the 1970's and the factories and steel mills are either closing or moving overseas, and many of those cities of 35,000-50,000 are losing that major factory and its 10,000 jobs. With no jobs, there is no economy, and surely no money to buy tickets to a hockey game. The team is folding. They are a lousy team anyway, but that doesn't make it any easier. Reggie Dunlap (Paul Newman) is the team captain, and Strother Martin plays Joe McGrath, the General Manager. Reggie has a brainstorm, that if he can get the team to believe that there is a possibility of the team being sold to a Florida retirement community, just maybe they may start winning, and somebody might just actually want to buy this team. He goes to work on a local sports writer and convinces him. Next he goes after some of the younger players. Joe McGrath comes up with three new players. They are brothers, 19, 20, & 21, the Hansens. They are like homicidal maniacs on the ice! These guys are crazy; fighting everyone. Pretty soon, the whole team goes nuts and gets the reputation for so much violence that the other teams don't quite know what to do. In the mean time, all of the hockey fans are going crazy for this "gonzo" form of hockey and attendance goes through the roof. Whats more important, from all of this fan support and self-confidence they are winning! Soon they are real contenders for league champion. This is a laugh a second movie, crudely filled with all of the raw humor and craziness that you'd expect from a hockey movie. You'll enjoy this one!Read full review
