SHE LOVES ME was, simply, the supreme achievement of the team which gave us the Pulitzer Prize Winning FIORELLO and the long time long run champ FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. One of master producer/director Harold Prince's early directing jobs, it was lovingly transferred to LP in a 2 LP set by MGM and now remastered to CD by other hands with the two LPs fitting on a single CD. The only way the recording could possibly be improved would be yet another release with a bonus disc containing Bock & Harnick's original Demo containing virtually enough quality CUT songs for a second show (the team modified virtually all their shows heavily on the road). If you love old fashioned melodic Broadway with insightful, literate lyrics delivered by consummate professionals (Barbara Cook, Daniel Massey, Barbara Baxley, Jack Cassidy et al) at the peak of their powers, this is a Broadway Cast Album you need on your shelf. When first produced, this chocolate box of a musical drawn from the film "Little Shop On The Corner" about two workers in a European parfumerie who fall in love with each other through their correspondence, never realizing their actual identities, seemed to pale in the face of brasher, brassy competition like OLIVER, HELLO DOLLY and FUNNY GIRL, and barely ran a season, but of all its contemporaries, SHE LOVES ME has aged the best and for all the subsequent (and excellent) revival recordings, the original remains the best. There very nearly was a motion picture version with Julie Andrews, but movie musicals and Julie's producer second husband were both falling from favor at the time it was in the works and it didn't happen. There IS an excellent BBC televised version (missing only Maraczek's wonderful song "In Days Gone By") well worth seeking out though it has, as yet, never been issued on DVD.Read full review
