Aside from the performances and costuming of each cast member being superb, this story is incredibly touching as you witness and feel one man's journey to rise to all his beautiful potential amidst a merciless social mindset of "once scum, always scum." Mercy is the theme of this story, and this movie is a rare gem depicting how one merciful act of compassion and faith can beget more merciful acts that help a string of people rise above condemnation and helpless misery. Overall an encouraging message still applicable to our inner cities, ghettos, and prisons today. 134 minutes.
I saw this play on broadway and it was so magical and I wanted to see that full effect again, but this movie really disappointed me. It was a good movie, but it did not have any of the songs from the play in it at all. I really like the songs and the musical effect. I would love to see them remake this movie like they did the movie Chicago. That was very very good! :)
