This is a Terrence Malick film. If you don't know what that means, I'll try to sum it up: Whether it is a tale of 1950's spree-killers, turn-of-the-century farm laborers, Guadalcanal soldiers or even Pocahantas and John Smith, the historic and cultural context is always secondary to a far more transcendent philosophical probing that goes beyond the particular story at hand. So "The Thin Red Line" is not a war film. Sure, it is full of fantastic, historically-accurate battle sequences of the Guadalcanal fighting in World War II, But this stunning ensemble film is more concerned with the interior lives and questions of the searching minds under the steel helmets than any strategic victories shown on screen. Simply put, a profoundly moving and beautiful film, "The Thin Red Line", like any of Malick's four films, will win over most any viewer inclined towards deep introspection and existential questioning. Malick's trademark techniques of interior monologue voiceover, meditative shots of nature, and artistic pacing of narrative are all here to great effect. For any film fan like myself who is wary of the current war genre films (Tom Hanks will always be the death-kiss of mediocrity)and wonders if one can make a movie these days in this genre that does not smack of kneejerk sentimentality, showoff cinematography or retro-nationalistic propaganda, look no further: "The Thin Red Line" is a beautiful "war film".Read full review
I watched a very good silent film as there was no sound track on this DVD. The realism in the film-making and the performances of the actors carried this 'silent' film.
