The Unreal Story of Pro Wrestling is in my opinion a great Documentary about the legacy of the most controversial sport in history, Pro Wrestling. It talks about literally everything from the beginning of wrestling being the oldest sport in history with it's lineage dating back to Cavemen. It shows some ancient Ejyptian Hyroglyphics showing how popular wrestling (and trash talking) were in the ancient times. From there it discusses how even American PRESIDENTS were wrestlers including Washington and good ole "Honest" Abe. It covers the early days in the first years of the 1900s with stars such as George Hackenshmidt and Frank Gotch. It discusses the end of wrestling as a legitimate Sport only to become more of a theatric show. My favorite part of the DVD is here with Ed "Strangler" Lewis and how he was the "bridge" between wrestling as a sport, and wrestling as a show. It goes into the mid 1900s with the invention of Television and the new boom of Pro Wrestling with stars such as Lou Thesz, Verne Gagne, Buddy Rogers, Killer Kawlski and more. This documentary also covers long since dead classes of wrestlers such a Hookers, the most dangerous wrestlers ever. Hookers, as the name says have the ability to "hook" their opponents, and if they wanted to could easily end a career or even cripple their opponent. It covers everything from the 50s all the way up to the late 1990s with mega stars like Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, Diamond Dallas Page, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Andre the Giant and MANY more. It features all of these wonderful, insightful and interesting subject with interviews from the likes of Lou Thesz, Verne Gagne, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Vader, Vince McMahon and more. It also features footage of NWA, AWA, WCW and the WWF. All of this make The Unreal Story of Pro Wrestling a true Must Have for ANY fan of Professional Wrestling. I highly recommend this DVD!!! This is truly a trip down memory lane. This documentary goes from the 'Early' beginnings of wrestling, from cavemen wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, Competative wrestling, A Sideshow, Pro Wrestling to Sports Entertainment. A real behind the scenes look at how it all began to where it is today. Old School in the sense it still has the World Wrestling Federation, not WWE. More of an in-depth look into the business as opposed to Beyond The Mat. Very entertaining and insightful. Meant for a true fan of sports entertainment.
From the very beginning of wrestling the story begins. Wrestling the oldest competition on earth. Others say running is, but its hard to see people in a race for food. This Dvd is a great addition to any wrestling fans collection. But if your expecting to see great matches from WCW and WWE well this is not the dvd. This is more of a complete history of wrestling. From when the sport was actually considered a sport to the current day sports entertainment. The title should have been the history of wrestling.
This was a fantastic DVD. The entire history of professional wrestling up until the mid 1990's. From Georg Hackenschmidt, to Hulk Hogan, to superstars like Buddy Rogers, the Fabulous Moolah, Killer Kowolski, Sergeant Slaughter, The Iron Sheik, and many, many others. It is very detailed in nearly every aspect of the business, and gets very analytical with how America and professional wrestling meld. I HIGHLY recommend this documentary to any pro wrestling fan, or anyone with thoughts or opinions on it. I'm extremely glad I purchased this and added it to my DVD collection.
I first watched this on A&E about 10 years or so ago. I loved it then, and I love it now. It was one of the last works from Steve Allen, who dispite his views on censorship on television, was one of the funniest most entertaining men in the history of that medium. This story goes from the very early days of wrestling through the late 90's boom. A must have for any wrestling history buff.
