Ichabod Crane is a New York City police officer who has a lot of new tools and ideas about investigative processes. It is 1799, and officer Crane is 24. To get him out of his hair, his superiors have sent him to the tiny hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, where three people have been murdered by being decapitated, Peter Van Garrett, his son Dirk, and the widow Elizabeth Winship. Upon arriving, he has the bodies dug up and with his bag of specialized tools (made by him) sets about to determine exactly what happened. The town elders have told him that the murderer is an apparition - A headless horseman from beyond the grave who rides a heavy black steed. Ichabod does not believe in the Headless Horseman until the Magistrate Samuel Phillips is murdered by the horseman in his sight. Crane has a room at the Van Tassel house, and he is very attracted to their daughter Katrina. Crane has nightmares of his mother's torture when he was a child and he has made the young Masbath, who's father Jonathan was killed by the Horseman, his assistant. No one else is willing, all fearing the Horseman. Within the Western Woods, Crane discovers the Tree of the Dead, and the Horseman's grave; the entry-point into the natural world from the supernatural. The Horseman's skull is missing, and Crane eventually uncovers a plot revolving around revenge and land ownership with Katrina's stepmother, Lady Van Tassel who is controlling the Horseman by possessing his skull. She sends the Horseman after Katrina to kill her, so that she can solidify her hold on what she considers her property, a piece of land unjustly claimed by Katrina's father. Following a fight in the local windmill and a stagecoach chase through the woods, Crane eventually thwarts Lady Van Tassel by returning the skull to the Horseman, who regains his head and heads back to Hell along with his enslaver. I LOVE this movie. I think that this alternate interpretation of the story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is fantastic. Tim Burton is the master of reworking classic tales and making them just as appealing as the originals. It also doesn't hurt that Johnny Depp is the star. I am currently on a mission to obtain every Johnny Depp movie, that is currently available, on DVD. I can now mark this one off of my list!
