PLOT: SPY named Topaz is under cover in Cuba and the "hint" of missiles sends a spy for the US (he is French) to Cuba to ferret out the details~ very confusing plot~very~ Shadows of the Cold War are here~ convoluted plot made simple~ NO USA operative can get inside Cuba so they recruit a French Spy who goes undercover to Cuba to ferret out the details of the Russian Missiles rumored to turning up there~ the spy Frederick Stafford is having an affair with a lovely Cuban operative Karin Dor (lovely lady) but we are repulsed by them both~ so we have little empathy or care what happens to this couple~ also drug into this confusion are some twist in Harlem with operatives and Cuban Nationals there~ three different endings were filmed~ NONE of them are good THIS ENDS VERY ABRUPTLY~ NOT ONE OF HITCHCOCK BEST~ AVERAGE AT BEST~ a young John Forsythe is fun to see~ because most of the main characters are very dislikable it is hard to care about anyone in the plot~ I GIVE THIS ONE A 6 OUT OF 10~ FOR BETTER HITCHCOCK see Frenzy, Psycho and The Trouble with Harry~Read full review
The classic Hitchcock movies were all that Mom hoped.

The story line was poorly developed throughout the film, pretty much over-shadowed by star power, rather than substance of the story being developed as the focal point. Too many loose ends and the film's ending was vague at best. Not Hitchcock's best work !

Even Hitchcock's lesser films are better than most directors' best. So many of his films are masterpieces, but his last few are not up to his own 3-decade standard. Still, this is a good, intricate, cleverly detailed production which provides plenty of entertainment.
