I try to buy a reasonable number of cool, futuristic, and hip scientific DVDs every year to show my Environmental and Earth Science classes at a local university. You can imagine how stale, outdated and boring typical Science video selections are in a university video library. The IMAX version of Blue Planet is an awesome digital masterpiece encompassing our Space Shuttle explorations, which always tend to focus back on our planet Earth. From an on the ground viewpoint, the viewer is witness to the incredibly powerful Shuttle launch sequence, followed by astronauts experiencing on-board portal views and making cinematography of our beautiful planet. You find yourself swept into the picture. The narrative is very sensuous, with fresh and calming new-age soundscapes. Most of my students are moved to comment favorably about their alluring and enchanting experience viewing this video, and want to know where to get a copy. If you are an involved environmentalist, this video makes a well-crafted impression. If you are not yet environmentally involved, Blue Planet will get you well on your way. This is your wake-up call from Mother Earth.Read full review
it's only 45 minutes long and while some space images are reasonably good looking - but not the best - the rest of the documentary just doesn't have anything to offer. The music is stressful at times. Just like many other Imax movies, the script is all over the place, not following clear themes, it quickly jumps from one idea to another without development. Also, Imax footage projected on a TV screen has nothing from an actual Imax movie theater experience, as a matter of fact I think a standard 35mm film or digital image look better on a TV screen than Imax film modified to fit. If you want nice Earth images from space, look for an actual recent Nasa DVD.

I love to learn as much about our planet as possible, especially when learning an urgent documentation about our planet as shown by our own astronauts in space, and especially when seeing what was shown in IMAX theaters around the world; it is worthy of purchase. Our Blue Planet is displayed as the only place in the universe for mankind to live, and as such, we should take care of it and protect it. However, man has done the opposite; he has committed senseless destruction to our only home and has jepardized its very existence and all on it. Our Blue Planet must be saved. Hopefully we are not too late. I love the sobering revelation of all that is shown on this DVD and its way of awakening us to the need to love and care for our Blue Planet and all in it.
Excellent documentary. I liked it very much.

This movie is interesting at first but then you start to nod off because it is very repetative. I think they could have done a lot more with this movie if they had made a lot more of the dangerous animals (sharks) in it a lot more. I wouldn't say that you needed to buy this. Dont Buy!!
