Birth of a Nation is actually two movies. The first tells the story of the Civil war. Director D. W. Griffith sees heroism, suffering, and sacrifice on both sides of the conflict. The second half of the movie takes place during the Reconstruction era. Unfortunately it is blatantly racist, glorifying the birth of the Klan. It does remain a milestone of cinema, but the negatives probably outweigh the positives.

i bought this for it's historical significance. I saw on the History Channel about how this was the first full length silent film and was intrigued. As a black man, I am still curious as to how this country can still be so quick to state how African Americans don't have the right to complain about the transgressions that have put several of my people in impoverished conditions. Barack Obama is a great agent for change and hopefully he will be a catalyst that can change the mindset of those that would view this movie as "the good ol' days".
I realize that by today's standards this movie could be considered offensive. That being said, keep in mind this movie came out in 1915 and the atrocities of the Civil War were not that far removed from history. This movie shows how that war divided our nation and the psychological, physical and emotional tolls in society. It is a truly moving experience that words can't do justice.

If you think you can't possibly be "moved" by a silent film then think again. Ten minutes into this movie you will not be able to walk away. I quickly forgot that it wasn't a "talkie" and became completely wrapped up in the story. This is the story of a proud and virtuous people who have been defeated in war, abused and treated as criminals in the land of their birth. Finally with a tenacious spirit and a strong faith in God, they turn back the tide of evil and reclaim their birthright. If you enjoy movies where the "good guys" win in the end, then you will love this film! This movie is truly worthy of it's universal distinction as the greatest silent film ever made. A true American classic and one of the top 5 movies of all time.
When you watch this timeless classic you simply forget that it is B&W, silent, 3-hours long and made almost 100 years ago. D.W. Griffith introduced countless innovations like quoting real documents with the exact sourcing before each chapter, monocular view of battlefields, etc. Every educated person on this planet must see this masterpiece. Racial element in this movie is greatly exaggerated. In any historical art there are always good and bad guys. One nation wins, another loose. One can't say that showing events of Napoleonic wars has anti-French content. If we are totally politically correct than art must be banned altogether. DVD version made it easier to have this movie in your possession at all times, show it to your guests and select the needed chapter. From the historical aspect this DVD can work as a dictionary: it is easy to find a quote you are looking for. With the typical ebay pricing under $10 it is rather affordable and valuable purchase.Read full review
