No Such Thing is an early movie directed by Hal Hartley (who also directed "Henry Fool"). The title refers to there being no such thing as monsters. Sarah Polley's character goes to Iceland to search for her missing fiance (part of a film crew investigating a legendary monster),and she brings the monster who killed the film crew back to New York which ignites a media firestorm to the benefit of Polley's employer. The monster who has existed since life first appeared on earth is a sarcastic misanthrope who hates humans as well as his own miserable life drinks to dull his inner pain. The monster asks Polley to help him end his life with the help of an eccentric Icelandic scientist which she refuses insisting on trying to help the monster change his life instead. Scientists and the American military seek to use the monster for weapons research, so monster & maiden flee back to Iceland and solve the problem in their own way. I liked the dark humor of this modern beauty and the beast story. Director Hartley likes to expose the selfish motives and general stupidity in his characters. The sympathetic characters actions lend moral weight to the story which provides this movie with a satisfying ending. I bought this movie and I recommend it because it is the first monster movie I've ever seen that plays it straight. this unusual movie is refreshing and enjoyable.Read full review
A dark comedy that is worth watching. Young Beatrice travels to Iceland where her fiance was killed by a monster (Burke). But on the way her plane crashes and she miraculously survives and 6 months later makes the trek through Iceland to find the monster. The monster guy is pretty funny, has a drunken sailor type of attitude, and likes to mess with people. Since he really can't die he is lonely and depressed. She brings him back to New York where Beatrice's boss (Helen Mirren) uses them for Pub and scientific experiment. A different sort of movie that is worth watching. Doesn't have a definitive ending and the watcher can only speculate.
The disc arrived early great job shipping, I love this movie always have and it was a good deal but the cover is pretty faded and the disc was covered in an oily film and was kinda scratched. I have gotten good at doctoring scratched discs so after some doing it does work and if it were up to me to do it again i would. No problems really just could've tried to at least clean the disc a little before shipping it.
