I saw this movie for the first time when i was just a child and loved it even then. Miyazaki always makes excellent films and this one, kiki's delivery service, and spirited away are excellent picks for children and adults. There are two english versions of the film, there's this one dubbed in the 90's and then there's one dubbed by disney around 2005. Personally I like both equally well, where this one has the same voice actor from rugrats that kids really enjoy the newer version has actual kids playing the parts which makes it sound more acurate. This dvd has only trailers as the extras, contains only a full screen version of the film and only has the english language track, where as the newer version has a behind the microphone feature, a second disc w/ the original japanese storyboards and original japanese trailers of the film, and comes in the widescreen format. Basically I'm giving this information to tell you that if you enjoyed the movie long ago you should get this version or if you've never seen it get the newer disney version. If you are getting the movie for kids it doesn't really matter which one you get because they will enjoy either selection.Read full review
This is the best dubbed version in my opinion. I watched this film in my 10th grade Japanese class and instantly fell in love. Now many years later my kids have this great movie to enjoy!

I have been actively looking for a copy of the Fox 2002 release of this to replace my damaged DVD. I own a number of Disney DVD's that my daughter loves, but I don't like the Disney version of Totoro. Additional dialogue was added. The voices selected don't seem to fit the project. Something of Mizaki's story was lost. While the Fox version of Totoro has flaws, I feel it captures the spirit of the movie. If you are looking for a Japanese language version of this film, it is not contained this version of the film. Totoro tells the story of Satsuki and Mei, two sisters, who move to the country with their father, while they wait for the release of the mother from the hospital. The mother's illness is part of the story, but not presented in a way that it is frightening to kids. Mei, the younger sister, meets a Totoro while playing. It begins a series of adventures of the two girls with the magical guardians of the woods. It is a hit with my daughter and adults don't mind the multiple viewings that preschools live for.Read full review
This is the original Streamline English dub which was released by Fox in the 1990s. If you're searching for this specific version of the movie, you probably already know about a lot about it. I prefer this version to the the newer Disney dub, although the Disney dub is still quite good.

I’m not going to review the movie because odds are that if you are seeking this dvd it’s because you had the VHS of the Troma dub of TOTORO and weren’t happy with the Disney version. This is definitely a dvd from the very early days of dvd authoring and you can tell from the menus and bizarre inner box art. But it delivers exactly what I wanted. The original English dub of Totoro in a format that won’t degrade with repeated viewing. I’d like to preserve my VHS so watching the dvd is a great substitute.
