Okay, so it has plenty of stereotypes but I don't think it is fair to judge this movie by today's standards. When we watch it, I'm sure to talk to my kids about how things may be seen differently today...but that doesn't take away from the thrill they feel in watching the battle between good and evil. Somehow Disney managed to capture the essence of the fairy tale (even if he softened things a bit) but the dragon remains truly awesome to many children. Before you judge this one, sit down and watch it with a child. Odds are, they'll be riveted. I still am and I still love the music, too. Love surviving against all odds, good defeating evil and love winning out in the end. So, okay maybe NEXT time, it'll be the princess who awakens the sleeping prince....
This movie is great, but as I tried to watch it through the eyes of a child, I was a little taken aback. Maleficent, the "mistress of all evil", is quite scary and when she turns into a dragon, she is terrifying. There is fire and brimstone and even a reference to the fiery pits of hell. It is a shame, becuase Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) is charming and good fairies are so cute. There is a scene where the kings and the steward get drunk and that is also a shame, but my children don't realize what they are drinking and why they are acting so silly, so that goes over their head. Actually, as I write this review, I am wondering why I have let them watch this at all. It is a little much for young children.
My daughter likes the movie but the movie came in a plastic sleeve - no "case" which creates additional expense: One must purchase a case for the DVD. This increases the overall cost of the DVD. The lack of a case was not mentioned in the ad. Why should the seller make the purchaser aware of this? The seller has absolutely no reason to do so. Ebay is quite LAX in the support of the purchaser. Ebay is "all about" keeping the seller happy. Welcome to Ebay's lack of support for the purchaser. However...if the SELLER has even the slightest dissatisfaction with the purchaser, EBAY would JUMP to provide support for the seller, placing a "strike" against the individual that is actually FUNDING EBAYS FEES (the buyer). How sad to know that EBAY is under the impression that they are collecting their fees from the seller. WAKE UP EBAY. The BUYER is paying the fee. Get it together.Read full review
In my childhood, I was impressed by this animated feature, its scope and color (and self promotion). Now, though, to me it pales in comparison to Japanese animation and character portrayal.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
While I was a little disappointed when I first read the specs for this DVD, after purchasing it, I am very pleased with it. The thing I was a little miffed about was Disney's seeming omission of the "Tchaikovsky Story" documentary that accompanied the laserdisc box set from several years back. After getting my DVD, I find that the documentary is indeed on this set. The picture surpasses that of the laserdisc, and the sound is fantastic. I was amazed at how clean this print is, with hardly any artifacting at all. Disney has obviously spent a lot of time and effort on producing a top notch product with Sleeping Beauty. Disney is quickly becoming the top producer of DVD's when it comes to picture/sound quality, and available extras. I actually think that the extras on this disc are better than the Platinum Edition of Beauty and the Beast, which is surprising seeing as SB is an older film. One of the features I thought was wonderful was how you choose what type extras you want to view. If you want kid friendly extras, you follow one link. For extras that appeal more to adults, follow the other. A perfect edition of a perfect film!! You will NOT be disappointed with this one.Read full review
