The thing about music reviews is that it really depends upon one's taste. See, you might really be into death metal or funk or gansta rap and I'm not, so I'm not going to find a whole lot of musical value in that. So, it's hard for me to say to all of you that this is a really good or really bad album based upon my own tastes - since not everyone shares my same loves. I am, however, a big coinsurer of different types of music. While I may not rush out and buy the latest Clay Aiken or particularly enjoy his songs, I have no problem telling you he has a nice voice - because he does. Celine Dion can sing (and my wife forces me to listen to her over and over), but she's not really my cup of tea. But if you're honest, you can't deny that she can belt out a note or two. Most of you cool dudes and neato chicks out there may be way too into the latest fad and making sure that nobody laughs at you to know who Josh Groban is. Had I not married the woman I did, I wouldn't either. Because I'm just like all of you - LOVE ME!!! Anyway, Josh Groban, from what I understand, is a relatively new artist that hit the scene a few years ago. My wife says he's around 23 but when you listen to him sing, his youth will blow your mind. Because this kid can sing. This kid has an amazing voice. His is a pure and flawless sound that makes it impossible to deny his talent. His second full CD entitled "Closer" is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Listening to him makes you wonder why he's not perusing a career in opera or something higher than releasing albums and trying to get played on the radio. Of course, there is a simple explanation to that - money. But for all the praise I could ever heap upon the kid, I'm not a fan of the genre of music he puts out. And most of you probably aren't either. This is the music of the old and sophisticated and you need only look at the design of this website to know that we are not. But if you are able to place your love for punk or alternative away for one second and afford yourself a finer pleasure of a voice that has the ability to fill you with emotion - you might really like Josh Groban. Of course, I'm not as deep. "Closer" has one song you might have heard so far. Groban performed "You Raise Me Up" at the Super Bowl this past year (no, not during the nipple-rific Halftime Show. During the pregame). Here in Dallas, it has gotten a moderate amount of air time on the light rock stations. The rest of the CD is full of operatic covers and original music written for him. The main problem I have with it is the liberal use of Italian songs. I like to understand the lyrics of the music I listen to. But you might not, and if so, it might not bother you so much because he sounds as flawless on those songs as he does the others. There are thirteen tracks in all and not one of them are bad - but you have to like his style to really groove on him.Read full review
The standard version of Josh's "Closer" CD was released November 21, 2003. Its 13 songs are all great. There are six songs in English including "You Raise Me Up", which is an extremely uplifting song. "Broken Vow" is another beautiful love song, although a sad love song. "When You Say You Love Me" also is very moving. "My Confession" and "Remember When It Rained" are both awesome love songs. "Si Volvieras A Mi" is an excellent Spanish song. The CD also has some great Italian songs..."Oceano", "Mi Mancherai (Il Postino)", "Per Te", "All'Improviso Amore" and "Caruso". There is one song in French, "Hymne A L'Amour". The lyrics are included with the CD and if you buy the full-size lyric book you will get the lyrics, the music notes, and English translations of the foreign-language songs. Josh Groban, born on February 27, 1981, is my all-time favorite recording artist. His music is inspiring. Give this CD a try. If you don't like it, make it a gift for a friend or family member. His voice is a gift from God. I also recommend his first CD which was released November 20, 2001, and his two DVDs, "Josh Groban Live In Concert" (December 3, 2002), and "Josh Groban Live at the Greek" (November 30, 2003). This is my first Josh Groban CD and what an excellent choice for my first time introduction to this amazing artist. I'm not really a big opera fan but after listening to these beautiful songs Josh has won me over. My favorite of these renditions is Mi Mancherai. This song brought tears to my eyes with it's simplicity and beauty. The sound of that wonderful violin weaving it's way around Josh's incredible voice is just mesmerizing. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Per Te is another of my favorites followed by Oceano. And of course I shouldn't forget his renditions in English which are just as lovely and it's hard to pick a favorite from the group of My Confession, When You Say You Love Me, Broken Vow, Remember When It Rained and last but certainly not least the inspiring (uplifting) You Raise Me Up. I definitely recommend this CD, particularly to a budding Josh Groban fan!Read full review
Seriously, words can't describe how good Josh Groban's albums are! You have to experience them yourself. And you will wonder why you haven't listened to his music earlier! HE IS THE BEST! When I first heard his voice, my jaw droped to the ground, I immediately listen to more of his songs on youtube, and I knew then... I was hooked! Ever since the day when 17-year-old Josh Groban sang in public for the first time, he's continued to amaze with his gifted voice. Since then he's sold over 27 MILLION albums, all of his albums went Multi-Platinum. If you're still debating whether-or-not to buy his albums, go listen to samples of his songs on amazon/itunes, and you'll be hooked, just like I was. (Songs I highly recommend trying out first are February Song, When You Say You Love Me, Si Volvieras a Mi, My Confession, Bells of New York City, Happy In My Heartache, You Are Loved (Don't Give Up), Love Only Knows, Awake, Below The Line.) He also made an awesome Christmas album, by the way. :)Read full review
Wonderful music as always from Josh Groban. I did not realize this CD was in another language. I may have reconsidered had I know this. But all of that to be said, his voice is outstanding.
