“What the Bleep Do We Know” is a good popular film. Although there are no earth–shattering discoveries to be found, it will probably widen the horizons of many of the people who view it, in some way. Real professional scientists will undoubtedly scoff and consider it beneath them, but for lay people it is quite entertaining. The battle between science and “non–science” (I will call it that rather than using more caustic descriptors such as ignorance or closed–mindedness) has raged for millennia now, much to the dismay of those of us who simply search for the truth. Recent conflicts fueled by religious fundamentalism demonstrate with painful clarity how little progress we have made towards enlightenment in recent decades. This movie presents scientific concepts and seeks to open people’s eyes and present things that they never considered. I suspect that the filmmakers’ intent was to have the viewer say “Gosh, I never thought of it that way before!” Not surprisingly, it has a self–serving aspect as well, the filmmakers had their own agenda to put forward involving an ancient being coming into the present in a non–violent “Ghostbusters” kind of way, but that is pretty easily ignored. Heck, it’s a movie, you have to expect some flashy storyline! Several of my friends have mentioned the book “The Dancing Wu–Li Masters” after seeing the film, and I think that is an appropriate comparison. (that is a book worth reading, too, if you haven’t read it already!) The convergence of quantum physics with Eastern religion has been described and explored, more and more, in recent times, and perhaps this film is part of that process. You should see this film, if you are still reading now that you have hit the 4th paragraph. Whether you actually purchase it, as ebay would prefer of course, or simply rent it – that is up to you. It might be nice to buy your own DVD copy of this film – you may want to view it more than once, and it is also the type of thing that you can loan your friends, as a great conversation–starter!Read full review
When I caught part of this movie on a late night television channel, it intrigued me. It intrigued me so much that I had to have it. This movie will change your mind about both quantum physics and the way we make choices. You will begin to understand why our lives are limited only by our thoughts. The special effects are dazzling and well-done. And Marlee Maitlin is brilliant as always in her performance of Amanda who goes through a transformation from nervous photographer to enlightened individual. The physicists intersperse the film with their unique perspectives on how quantum physics explains how we are what we are and why we are. If you take this movie seriously, you can unlock the potentials within yourself to reach your untapped potentials. A lot of people say the entertainment value is not very good. But, it's not necessarily about entertainment. It's about learning. And the only way that you can truly know you have learned is by seeing an actual change in your behavior. And, this movie, can help you "learn" if you follow what it's saying. It does have some minor flaws that move it from an "11" on a scale of "10" to just a ten. It goes into an explanation of God that I slightly disagree with, and it uses a "channeler" of a 2000 year old prophet. But, even though she's channeling this prophet, the words she offers are nothing short of brilliant. So, whether she's a charlatan, or just a crackpot, the words she offers are brilliant! You can't always forsake the message, just because of the messenger. My favorite physicist is the one with the white beard who ends the show with a challenge. My favorite supporting character is the kid on the basketball court who asks Amanda how far down the "rabbit hole" she wants to go, which is an obvious allusion to "Alice In Wonderland", which curiously enough was written by Lewis Carroll who was really Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematician who was ahead of his time. If you don't own this movie, you are doing yourself a disservice. Or, you can just keep returning to the "life you know," and never get ahead.Read full review
This is an interesting movie for those who struggle between reliance on the scientific and the spiritual. This part movie, part documentary attempts to relate the laws of quantum physics to psychological and spiritual concepts - such as the power of our thoughts and emotions to affect physical matter. Whether or not you can wrap your mind around all the ideas presented (I certainly could not) this movie is a very nice introduction to some interesting concepts. If you buy into the ideas, you will likely want to see more, and there are a number of very good related books/documentaries out there. The film falls short on story line though. In an attempt to help viewers visualize some of the more abstract ideas, "What the Bleep do We Know" weaves a bizarre story in with traditional documentary-style interviews. Personally, I could have done without the the plot. Overall, it's worth watching if the concept intrigues you.Read full review
Description on back of DVD: Embark on a life-changing journey with Amanda (Marlee Matlin), a divorced photographer who tumbles down a metaphysical rabbit hole. Her mind-bending voyage through the worlds of science and spirituality includes revelations by quantum physics experts, playful animation, and even a conversation with a wise, 35,000-thousand-year-old being. Ultimately, Amanda's perception of reality is turned inside out and the meaning of life becomes clear. See for yourself why this groundbreaking movie became one of the most compelling and talked about films of the year. This documentary/movie changed my life. I first watched it on youtube several times and decided I NEEDED the dvd so I bought it on ebay. After everything sunk in I quit smoking cigarettes and I'm on a diet because I'm very obese and I've been very successful. Whenever I'm feeling down about life I just pop this dvd in and watch it and take from it one of the most inspiring lessons I've ever been taught in my life. Some people may not get it or they might get overwhelmed by it so I'm suggesting this dvd be for people with open minds and information junkies. The concepts in this dvd are by no means new but it is so well put together I recommend it to any one who wants to be inspired and make their thoughts work for them. Watch it over and over again, as many times as it takes, to reap the magic it holds. Marlee Matlin is wonderful!Read full review
I would rate WHAT THE BLEEP a 4 if it were presented as anything but the truth. This film is a propaganda project of the followers of Ramtha. Ramtha himself appears on the film, or rather his channeling prophet does. Ramtha is a 35,000 year old warrior spirit from ATLANTIS, currently appearing through the body of a slightly inebriated-looking woman who seems to have had a facelift and now speaks with an odd English accent, despite having been one more housewife/Cable TV saleswoman in Tacoma Washington before her revelation, roughly 20 years ago. I hate to ruin it for you. None of the above is made clear in the film, which seems to be about Quantum physics and the power of optimism. But the part that IS about science is not nearly so accurate or scrupulous as most scientists prefer such things to be and the rest is just hokum. The power of positive thnking is a good thing indeed, but its limitations are real enough for most of us to recognize them. The thrust of this film is that positive thought HAS no limitations and that nearly everything bad that happens is the result of some failure of ours to create a better reality, mostly by wishing and believing. There are approximately 5000 Ramtha followers worldwide, many of them living near Yelm, Washington. Among them are the people who produced and directed this film. There is now a sequel, called DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE. Maybe it will be as funny as this one.Read full review
