This is a Classic source, but with plenty of room for disagreement. If you read this I urge you to read and consider the very different point of view taken by W.D. Davies in Paul and Rabbinic Judaism. Karl Barth's interpretation of the Book of Romans stresses the sovereignty of God and the centrality of Christ in salvation. In effect, he argues against liberal theology that downplays divine intervention in human affairs and instead highlights human factors. Davies argues that Paul's theology and teachings were deeply rooted in the Judaism of his time, particularly in the Pharisaic tradition. He suggests that Paul's understanding of key theological concepts, such as righteousness, law, and salvation, was influenced by the debates and discussions within first-century Judaism, including Rabbinic Judaism. In brief, Davies emphasizes the continuity between Paul's thought and the broader Jewish context in which he lived and worked. Still, there are significant differences with Rabbinic Judaism and Davies addresses this as well. Read full review

For me, this is the hardest book I've ever read. I think what is being said is good, but he speaks over my head. This book seriously challenges my intellect, however, if you are good at reading comprehension, then I think it would probably be a good book. There is no question Karl Barth is a deep thinker and doesn't pass the buck by not addressing the text. The interesting thing is this. I have read hard books before and frankly, lost interest, yet with Barth I am still very curious with what he is trying to say. I want to continue trying to comprehend the book and actually plan to start over and try again. It seems good enough to struggle through the difficult and deep water that you tread in while reading this book.I cannot say I agree with Barth and I really don't want to leave this review with a dogmatic opinion on his thoughts. I encourage you to think for yourself. Go ahead and give it a whirl.... buy the bookRead full review
