This is very subjective. I look for lighting, photography, and set design in a film. The script comes last, for me. The von Sternberg films is what I was interested in, with this set. Today, what is regarded as "realistic lighting" bores me. In other words, lighting that's natural, what we see on a regular basis. Okay, fine, enjoy it. But seventy years ago, and one hundred years ago, and one hundred and ten years ago, most people did not want to see in movies what you could see just opening your front door. Even movie theatres, (in the twenties), became a fantasy experience, and von Sternberg keenly knew this. These three movies by him, in this set, are white canvases, with his cinematic brush strokes upon them. It's not meant to look like what you can see at home for free, any more than gazing at "Mona Lisa" in the museum . I don't go to a ball game to see the ordinary. I go to see what I can't do. And these vintage films do that for me. They challenge my mind's heights and depths.Read full review

This is a nice set of Marlene Dietrich movies, although probably not some of her best. The prints aren't as crisp as I would like, but since some of them date back to the 1930's maybe that's the best they can do. A bit fuzzy, but not unwatchable or distracting. Sometimes the sound isn't too great either on some of the older movies. This is a two disc set of five movies, but for some reason they put four movies on one disc and one movie, Golden Earrings, on one disc. The other disc has two movies on each side of the disc. All discs are blank; no artwork. The movies do come with a DVD menu and a trailer. The case is in a sleeve but there are no inserts inside. I bought this DVD set brand new and sealed, but one of the disc holders was broken. probably by the USPS. For the money this is a good set to own, rather than buying all of the movies separately. There is some wild stuff in here that is fun to watch. Check it out.Read full review

Been crazy about "Blonde Venus" since I first saw it 20 years ago. The lighting, the black & white cinematography, the somewhat ridiculous storyline, and Dietrich's way in front of a camera are breathtaking. I was thrilled to learn that it had made it's way onto DVD - along with four more of her films, only one of which ("Morocco") I'd seen before. The DVD transfers are terrific, the sound is excellent, and if you can suspend your disbelief for 90 minutes or so, you'll have a good time watching these films. They don't make 'em like this anymore!
Marlene Dietrich was a great actress It took me 69 years before I really took a look at her and when I did, I fell in love.

Marlene Dietrich is one of a kind. My favorite of the collection is Golden Earrings. The acting is so well done and so believable. It is a World War II movie wherein two allies are captured and escape and try to complete their mission. One is discovered by a gypsy, played by Dietrich who proceeds to put holes in his ears and earrings made of gold. Great movie and wonderful product quality as well.
Some of Dietrich's best at a bargain price. Morocco especially is a winner.
