After working several years with progressive rock giants Genesis, Peter Gabriel left to create his own soundscapes of music and mayhem as a solo artist. This, his first album of three eponymously titled albums simply called Peter Gabriel, displayed the wonderful songwriting that helped make Genesis such an important band, but with his own all-star lineup of musicians (including the lovely Kate Bush on vocals, and King Crimson's Robert Fripp and Tony Levin). Here was a breakthrough album that not only displayed Gabriel's flair for the dramatic, but also brought about his first solo hit, the oddly synchopated 'Solsbury Hill.' But there is a wealth of uncharted territory on this album that begs to be explored. Expertly produced by Bob Ezrin, who later produced Pink Floyd's The Wall, Peter Gabriel's first album was a triumph for an artist looking for redemption after leaving his legacy with Genesis. Sure, Genesis went on to commercial success, but artistically Peter Gabriel gave them a depth they seldom reached without him. Gabriel continued to create excellent albums, but this is the album that started it all. I rated this album Good because of the marvelous musicianship and pristine production, and the songwriting was very good, too. Gabriel did go on to create even better albums, culminating with 1986's So album. But this was a very good start to what has become a stellar solo career, and if you're looking to expand on Gabriel's albums rather than just his hits, this is a great place to start.Read full review
