The product came newly packaged. There were flaws when this player came out years ago. But it seems to work right at this time. I know there were problems with the DVD tray jamming, but it seems okay right now. Instructions are not the greatest. One can tell it was translated from Chinese or wherever as there are many mistakes in the English. This version of the paper instructions does not have a trouble-shooting page. All in all, it seems to be fine for what it is. These are hard to get now. I am having a problem hooking it up to my Sony XBR. The stations won't come into the Lite-On DVD recorder. I may have to use a conversion adapter. My other one played through an old TV with a conversion box through channels three or four. My big screen does not need a conversion box, but may need a digital to analog converter. I don't know. Therefore, I have not been able to record anything on the Lite-One LVW-5005 yet.Read full review

The Liteon LVW-5005 is a very good dvd recorder,in my opinion. You can record onto dvd's (& cd's too). The All-Write technology is particularly handy when shopping for disks to record on.The "Easy Guider "menu makes recording extremely easy to accomplish. But there are also things to look out for when buying these recorders. One is the age of the recorder.Buying an older model is generally like spinning a roulette wheel, you are taking a big chance that something will soon fail. More often then not the most typical failure is the DVD Burner Drive (per David Waite of drw_it_pro )after inserting a new disc you will either get "no disc" "disc error" or after briefly recording the "write fail "announcement. My advice when shopping for a Liteon is to buy new or buy one that has had a new burner drive & firmware installed.Read full review
The DVD RW is low cost over the years even if not used much like this one the clamping cushion gets sticky and will not drop from the bottom of the disk, this prevents the disk from ejecting from the machine. i removed the adheasive and installed a new thin felt ring pad. It works fairly well now. A better fix is to install a standard IDE sony or lite-on DVD RW drive 16X or better plugs right in but will not fit the case opening.

Can record my programs and stops the nonsense of "can't be recorded in Vr+ format"!! Tapes were the answer before; now DVD's are easy.

Getting a little old now but I still find this unit easy to use and seems like it will record anything you put into it. No fuss with Disks. Not many good options out there to replace this Recorder. Had one fail, the Disk Door wouldn't open so it was cheaper to replace the whole unit. I believe it would suit your needs for basic recording and transfers.
