The development story and end result of Ultima VIII: Pagan is really a shame. Up through Ultima VII: The Black Gate, Richard Garriott and Origin had the lions share of control over Ultima games development and production. Soon afterward, EA bought Origin and everything started going downhill. It has been well documented that EA's unrealistic deadlines and "big brother" management style heavily interfered with what could have been a fantastic game! To start, the initial release of Pagan was rushed (do to forced deadlines) and riddled with mechanical issues and bugs. EA/Origin released a huge patch to fix some of the glaring problems with the initial release, but even then, the game was a mere shadow of what it could have been. Its been noted that some of the games dialogue and other things had to be cut completely in order to make the forced deadlines. I give it 3 stars, because even with the major problems, it is not without some positive points. The graphics and animation are very good compared to previous Ultima titles, and the story (while not fully realized) had incredible potential. This is the first Ultima in a long time that doesn't take place in Brittania, but in a far away world called Pagan where The Guardian banished you (the avatar). You must traverse this terrifying world in an effort to escape and return to Brittania, doing whatever it takes to succeed, even if its not aligned with your characters virtues. Its really a shame this game didn't get the treatment it deserved, because it could have been another Ultima masterpiece!Read full review
