Typically when the Sci-Fi channel gets ahold of long dead franchises and attempts to revive them a decade later the result isn't pleasant for anyone. Take the poor attempts like "Bats: Human Harvest" and "Lake Placid 2" as prime examples of their foley. So naturally, the bar was very low entering the new attempt at Pumpkinhead lore but my hopes remained high, and at the end of the day I will say that "Ashes to Ashes" is likely the best Sci Fi Original I've seen, which means little to nothing for bragging rights. Unlike other in name only sequels, "Ashes To Ashes" has 2 returning characters from the first "Pumpkinhead"; Lance Henrikson reprising his role as Ed Harley, and a new face portraying Bunt Wallace. And believe it or not, these ties make all the difference in sequels. You can connect to the previous films, the direct connection creates plot points that extend the "universe" of the franchise and ultimately draw us deeper into the film for a better, more enjoyable viewing experience. Props on that. Why can't any of the other films in the plethora of sequelhood follow that idea? Moving on, the plot for "Ashes To Ashes" has a town Doctor/Mortician/Veterinarian/Plumber (kidding on the latter two), played excellently by Doug Bradley AKA Pinhead, finally have his illegal operation busted after years of profitable exploitation. See, all these years he'd been taking in the corpses and giving the kin ashes, all the while he harvested their deceased's organs and dumped their bodies in a soupy pit. The town's folk come together and summon Pumpkinhead to serve the justice the Sheriff cannot. Of course, they all have second thoughts and try to thwart the demon themselves after they realize their collective decision was no better than the crimes the Doc is guilty of. Usually I'd want to hit these backwoods folk on the forehead with a mallet, but luckily for us it just leads to more enjoying slaughter. And the slaughter is inspired I must say. I wonder if, perhaps, Pumpkinhead was an angered, repressed artist in a former life because I must comment that his kills are very inventive. Shot in Romania, like all of Sony's flicks, the cast is less than capable. The head liners, Lance and Doug, are excellent but the rest are a slew of mediocrity on their greatest line and clearly struggle to simply sound out their english dialogue. Romanian natives sounding out english coupled with faux Southern backwood hick accent is a prime recipe of terror; it delivers, but don't fret for it is not too bad and most die anyways. Pumpkinhead, the monster, is good...when he is real. As in a man in a monstrously tall and slimed tendon exposing animatronic suit. Pumpkinhead is damn imposing and really looms over his prey. Not nearly as dread inducing as the Stan Winston creation, but certainly a step up over the rubber Pumpkinhead in "Blood Wings". The Sci Fi Channel curse remains, and for a few scenes he is entirely second rate CGI, and he looks terrible. Comical. Sorta like the talking Lizard in those old Budwieser commercials. I really wish Sci Fi would ditch the poor CGI heavy effects and just go practical, but I guess that's why I don't make movies...yet. At the end of the day I was pleased with "Ashes To Ashes". Decent story, nice to see returning characters and Lance Henrikson is always a pleasure, and the kills are just stellar. I can easily give a thumbs up for it shines within its low genre standard.Read full review
