Brothers, grab that roll of paper towels and a good stiff drink. You are about to experience the grief and loss of a brother, but also the honor and dignity afforded him by the always faithful USMC. This movie will put you on an emotional roller coaster, but you will be much richer for having seen it. Tears will rain down, but you won't be able to stop watching this flick. Why HBO didn't release this to the theaters is beyond me, but I personally believe it should be required viewing in every high school in this nation. Why? Because it might bring forth some badly needed patriotism. Now a note to my fellow Wyomingites. This movie deals with the (real) loss of one of our own sons. One would almost fear that Hollywood would desecrate our great state and it's conservative values. However, much to the contrary they do us honor. To those who aren't here, yes, that's how we roll in this state. To those of us who are here, maybe this will attract a few more real patriots to join us. POWDER RIVER! LET 'ER BUCK! Would I recommend this movie to a friend. Yes, as much as I would recommend praying to God.Read full review

Whether you are from a military family or not, you have to understand the importance of bringing the bodies of the dead men and women home. Lt. Col. Mike Strobl was a number cruncher for the Marine Corps. He had served his time in Desert Storm and now helps out by serving here at home. With a number of his friends returning to Iraq this time around, Strobl keeps a nightly watch on the list of casualities coming home from Iraq. He notices a Marine, PFC Chance Phelps, who had enlisted in Colorado, was returning. Strobl sees this as a chance to go back home to his hometown. Strobl volunteers to escort the body home. As events would dictate, PFC Chance Phelps was actually from Montana. Strobl could have backed out of this assignment, but he stayed the course. Rarely will an officer escort an enlisted man home, but Chance Phelps was NOT an ordinary man. First he was a Marine, a special breed of person. Secondly, he was only a PFC, Private First Class, but had six service medals. Last but not least, PFC Chance Phelps is the catalyst for a rebirth in Lt. Col. Mike Strobl. Strobl's escort turns into a life changing event for him as well as all that came in contact with PFC Chance Phelps. This story is one that touches the heart and soul of ALL AMERICANS. GOD bless America and GOD bless all the Chance Phelps of this world.Read full review
Film you MUST see… Now I’m not a huge fan of HBO films, but I feel I must mention this one. They seam to have gotten it right this time. Most of the time HBO creates films, which usually lack content and quality acting. Both of which have been over come in the film ”Taking Chance”. This is a film starring Kevin Bacon as Colonel Strobl, a marine who volunteers to escort the remains of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps home to Montana. This film shows how the armed forces handle the remains of the fallen and the respect and honor they have for them. Along the way you also see how the public, both silent and verbalized have the same for the fallen. From the Ticket agent who upgrades the Colonel to first class, the pilot who announces the special cargo to the funeral home director, we see the civilians of America know his mission, and have great respect for him and his escort. Do yourself a favor and watch this film, you will not be disappointed. I would not recommend it for small children, but can be a valuable film to watch with your middle school and older kids.Read full review
We hear the numbers, we read the statistics, but we don't really understand what the loss of a soldier in battle means in human grief. This touching movie documents the bringing home of a fallen soldier and seeing that his body is returned to his family in a dignified and honorable way. Based on a true incident, it begins with an officer deciding he would like to escort the body of a soldier to his family. Step by step we accompany him through the process and are touched by the respect and caring shown to him and his cargo by people along the way. There are no war scenes, no blood, no gore and no scenes inserted for shock value. Rather it gives us glimpses of these things through the words and actions of those who are directly or indirectly involved in the return of a young soldier's remains to his family. It removes the political opinions, the anti-war protests, and the questions of why we are involved in this war, and replaces them with an inside view of a soldier's death and return that we rarely get to see. I particularly appreciated how the movie drove home, in the kindest way possible, the point that every soldier who falls in battle is someone's son, father, brother, spouse or friend and his absence will be felt deeply by those who loved him. It is one of the most touching films I've seen in a very long time and would recommend it to anyone who would like to have a better understanding of what a war really costs in terms of human life. Kevin Bacon did an outstanding job as the officer accompanying the body home. He powerfully conveyed the emotions of the film without hype or slobbering emotion. The dignity and genuine caring he portrayed was reserved and tasteful. In fact, the whole film is well done.Read full review
Awesome movie. The care and respect that Dover Mortuary gives to our country's fallen heroes is amazing. I was unaware of the meticulous attention to detail provided. Cannot say enough wonderful things about this very sad movie.

I BOUGHT THIS BECASE I AM A MARINE AND HAVE BEEN THERE DONE THAT AND HAVE THE T-SHIRT AND 214 TO SHOW FOR IT. LEAVE NOBODY BEHIND AND BE THAT WITNESS..... This is a call to Attention, hair raising, "ALMAR". Being born in the woods and raised by a bear. This is for a Marine must have just like Full Metel Jacket, Platoon, Few Good Men, Iwo Jima, and Dear Hunter. I was there and this is Awsome, Snap, Ears, And Eyeballs. This also puts to light that just because you are a reservist or a poge at time of war you have to give Honnor the the fallen. They face a different war at home and still bare the scares of war. This is good for the sivilion world to see and pay tribute, see that there freedom does come as a big price. Thou we may not all just pay some but there are the few and the Honnored that Paid-it-foward, and paid it In Full. IF YOU WATCH THIS AND THE HAIR ON YOUR ARMS, NECK, BACK, OF LEGS STANDS UP: A: YOU NEED TO GOTO THE NEAREST DEPO AND SWARE IN. B: REINLIST C: DON'T LET THAT EAS COME AND TAKE IT LET IT GO. D: AND FOR YOU LIKE, ME YOU SHOULD HAVE WATCHED YOU SIX BECAUSE NOW I LOOK DOWN AND SEE THAT SIX PACK ON THE GROUND. IF I COULD I WOULD DO IT OVER AGAIN AND I ASK IF THE COMMANDER AND CHEIF WOULD LET ME I WOULD BUT AS THEY SAY HEAD OR BACK TRAMA IS ONE WAY TICKET HOME. SEMPER FI T8440 CPL USMC-MEDRead full review
This is an HBO made for tv movie which may turn some people off or some people might not see it if they don't subscribe to HBO. This is a true story about Lt.Col. Mike Strobl(I believe that is his rank) who saw battle in Desert Storm, but now has a desk job and for reasons unknown, volunteers to escort the remains of PFC Chance Phelps to his hometown in Wyoming for burial. Even though his rank is low, he is highly decorated and anyone who knew him had nothing but good things to say about him. The respect shown to them by everyone along their trip from airline baggage handlers to groundskeepers to passengers and anyone he meets along their trip is truly amazing. Interviews by his family after viewing the movie could not believe how true to life and accurate the accounts were. They felt very honored by the movie. Have a box a tissues handy for this one-a BIG box!Read full review
I decided to buy this film as my son had graduated from Parris Island a year ago and is now deployed. At graduation I was enlightened to the immense kinship the USMC has and almost ferocious pride in the Corp. I was amazed to see the change in my son and thought I would learn more about this. When I see all the negative, disrespectful things said about this Country in everyday life it,s nice to know underneath all this, lies a strength and respect I have had a privilige to witness. Very emotional but highly inspiring that there is such a strong underlying fabric to our society that gives these negative people the protection and human rights they take for granted. 5 stars but be ready to go on an emotional roller coaster.
A nurse and a mother of a Marine told me of this movie. It sounded like a good movie to see. But I just did not know how wonderful it would be. The movie from start to finish was awesome. It makes you rethink life. It showed persons that did no even know the fallen Marine showing respect. The movie as a whole was great. It showed from the soldier dying to being at Dover and the respect to morgue workers showed was just unbelievable. Then all along the way to the soldiers grave site the gratitude that was shown and the respect. If people showed this kind of respect to all soldiers from all the wars and conflicts just think what a better place this would be. This movie makes you think of all the fallen. It is a great movie and I feel privileged to own a copy!! From a proud retired military spouse. This movie is so awesome that the person who is a nurse and a mother of a Marine is going to receive the 2nd one I just bought. It is to honor her and her son who has, like my husband, layed his life on the line for our freedom and freedom of all. This movie shows how proud and what an honor it was to escort a fallen comrade to their final resting place. It shows in detail all aspects.Read full review
This very emotional and true story about a very young Marine who was killed in action. How his remains were brought back to his family, how his remains were treated all along the journey home. If this does not make you feel proud and appreciate how lucky we are. The most important thing this does for me is to show what the real cost of freedom is. The sacrifices that our soldiers make in blood and lives. This movie also shows how the family and community support these sacrifices. Had to have this and will watch it regularly and make sure when friends come over they watch it.
