The first purchase after recieving 1080 p HDTV and blu-ray player was the Planet Earth 4 DVD blu-ray set. At that point I said this has to be the apex of nature and high tech film media. Then I stumbled on this original IMAX DVD. When you think it's over it's not. It seems to wonderfully extend into deeper expaination of the evolution of the Island cluster, it's changing surrounding ocean currents and the effects these currents have on each species. The impact that humans have made in a history time line. I wish they could do the same documentary on Easter Island. It is said the human inhabitents exhausted the limited resources ie: wood for fishing boats ultimately eating each other. Now that's a story of the highest form of intelligence we know about!
I have to agree with DizzyToo!! The footage orginally filmed in Imax format and converted to blue-ray is just mind blowing. The quality of this documentary is on the same parallel as Planet Earth. Even though Imax is dated techonolgy the quality of the original media was on the same level as HD today. The most interesting part of the documenatry is how man has impacted natures balance of the volcanic cluster. Eventhough it is a remote and distant location, man has expolited its inhabitants by turning giant turtles upside down and cooking them in their own shells. This action almost led to the extinction of these unique creatures. Its a must buy DVD for your High definition library!!!!!!
This series is about 2.5 hours long and is fun to watch with little kids. It was easier to watch than Planet Earth which is too long for kids to really get into it. Galapagos has super wow factor visuals and the narration by Tilda Swinton is interesting. I enjoyed how they explained that Darwin was inspired to write Origin of Species at Galapagos. But be careful as there is some imagery in disc 3 of humans shooting goats to help the exotic wildlife population's food supply last...this might upset your kids. Otherwise, this series is great.
Very good quality, visually satisfying. Could have been longer with more detail but still very good.
