I bought this game because both the wife and I enjoyed the other similar games like Sims & Sims 2. Game play was similar to Sims 2, including creation of the sims I wanted to include on my island. After creation of 2 sims like myself and my wife, they were placed on the island to fend for themselves. The tutorial advised alot but as soon as my sims has more needs that I had to take care of, the game was more a matter of either having my sim eat or sleep most of the time rather then performing other functions. Then came friendships which since I was pretty much alone, it was a matter of conversing with monkeys which was rather boring. The tasks that needed to be completed where quite easy once I got the hang of the needs and how to perform the main functions. Completing certain tasks opened up new tasks to be performed. I did not like that my rescue was solved quickly in the game where I decided to stay on the island and continue playing. I was expecting the tasks to be harder or more problematic to solve rather then pretty much being pointed in the right direction. Before long, keeping my sim happy and solving boring tasks just made the game boring and predictable. The game graphics and overall plot to the game was nicely done and game play was quite easy if someone had already played sims 2 as I had done. I give this game a good overall rating but the makers could of probably done alot better with harder tasks and more gameplay.Read full review
Like many games, this one has advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, the game's character(s) have nothing but time. There is no hurry to anything I've played in it yet. However, unlike most games, the problems you encounter in Castaway are the same as real life- basically trying to find food, clothing, and shelter. Even bathing is important in this game! At this time, I have not completed the game, and I have only played in single player mode. From that perspective, I have found Castaway interesting and fun, but very time consuming. I've noticed the game is designed to make a player backtrack for items needed to get a higher level (like many games), but moving between previous levels /screens sometimes takes 10-30 seconds(?). While I know it is simply the technology in the P2, it can be frustrating. Please Note: From my understanding of playing in multi-player mode, more "work" gets done in a shorter time frame, bc of the multiple players, so that may make the game go faster. As well, in single player mode, your character has no-one to talk to but monkeys in the jungles, so you never hear words in the games audio, only caveman-ish grunts. Again, maybe diff in multi-player mode(?), but kinda boring. As a player proceeds through the game, more options "open up" for the player, allowing them to do different things(again, similiar to most games). In this game, those options are usually regarding food, clothing, and shelter, so there is a feeling of independence and accomplishment that is more realistic than "slaying the dragon,", or at least in single player mode. One drawback I have is; Unlike the ORIGINAL sim city- where you could delete /remove a mistake(something you built)[usually for a fee/penalty], and then build what you wanted (upgrades), I have not found anything in Castaway that allows this. Ex/ TIP: If you don't like a hut you've built, you cant remove it- you can only wait for the weather/rain to destroy it. And I recomend you Don't build the basic emergency firepit. Just go straight to building one of the better ones, or you'll end up having two (or three) firepits bc you cant just upgrade the first one. All in all, this is not a bad game. It has it's advantages and disadvantages, and in cost comparison, the {approx} $25.00 you'll pay will last a LOT longer in Castaway than a couple hours of Chucky Cheese or Dave& Busters. I hope this was helpful. Happy gaming!Read full review
This game is a very fun game to play! The game is about survival. Can your sim survive by him/her self? If not, you can always start off the game with a crew. Be careful though, as your crew might abandon each other and join seperate crews! The nice thing about having a crew is having all of the strengths that you will need to get off the island and finally have a hot shower! If you decide to play it by yourself without a crew, you can still make some friends (your in the jungle)! Be careful though as some animals may not take a liking of you on their island! Have fun playing this game as I gave it 4 out of 5 stars, only because the graphics get slow at some points in the game. I do know if this is true for every system, but it was like that for playstation 2 (ps2). All in all, a very fun game to play and it is worth playing some time! Thanks for reading my review and I hope it helped you!Read full review
PROS: The game is fun, no doubt about it. It takes about 10 hours if you go through straight aiming to beat it or can last much longer if you explore and do everything. It is kind of like the Sims but it seems as if there is much more to do then the same old Sims stuff. You have the feeling as if you are trapped on a an island, and it can even be comical at times. Also, it is not as much a constant struggle to keep your Sims meters up. CONS: Slow load times and the game freezes rampantly (even when it is new straight out of the box). It seems to happen more when you fast forward the game. Also, at times you randomly lose your ability to hit start to save or hot the "o" button. I lost a significant amount of data several times, so I gave up. Several people have had the same problem but many have not. I use the newer model slim PS2 deck and had the problem bad. So, you must save every 5 minutes (which takes close to a minute) if you have the problem of it freezing constantly. Other than that though, it is fun.Read full review
Sims 2 Castaway is, in my opinion, one of the best Sims games made. I enjoy building shelters, harvesting and foraging for food and materials, fishing, exploring all the different islands, and making friendships with the monkeys. It's definitely one of my favorite go-to games when I just want to relax for a while.
