I was a Dan Abnett fan long before I read 'Legion', but I was still impressed by the unique perspective this book showed of the Space Marine Legions during the Horus Heresy. I thought this book was excellent because in most depictions of Space Marines in Warhammer 40k, they are represented simply as unstoppable juggernauts. 'Legion' takes a new view, showing their potential for clandestine operations and psychological warfare. This book showed the Astartes of the Alpha Legion as simultaneously both aloof and much more human than ever before. I heartily recommend this book for long time Warhammer fans and those new to it as well. Very interesting reading.
Unlike most Heresy novels, this one focuses on more-or-less ordinary human beings rather than Space Marines. A look at what the Imperial Army during the Heresy Era might have been like, and its role in the Great Crusade. This plays to Abnett's strengths as a writer. The "Legion" of the title refers to the Space Marine Alpha Legion, a driving force throughout but one viewed largely from the outside.
