Anne Rice is an author who delves into the culture and setting of her characters with extensive research, imaginative style, and attention to detail (time period, clothes, traditions, male/female roles, everyday tools, architecture, etc.), with the result of putting the reader right beside the characters. When I become this involved in a book, I gauge it a good book. Rice has committed herself to a trilogy of the life of Jesus Christ (Christ the Lord is the 2nd book), putting the reader within his culture in a way similar to the film, The Passion, but it begins with Jesus as a child living in Egypt, then moving to Nazareth which is under the rule of the Romans, a very interesting transition of culture. While taking some liberties of imagination on the plot, Rice avoids theological debates that often arise on such a topic, and stays with the human factor of a person, Jesus, surviving the conflicts of his own existence and relationships, while acknowledging who he is and what he is destined to do for mankind. I can't wait to read the 3rd book! I have only read one of Rice's vampire stories, but am now a fan of Anne Rice due to this trilogy. She has a new focus in her writing, and I hope her previous fans give her a chance to do something new and different. In the future, I will be buying the trilogy as a gift!Read full review

My mother hasn’t spoken a word of it for years. My foster father, Joseph, is old now, white haired, and given to dreaming. I never forget.” Anne Rice has written another memorable book in her life of Christ series. The Road to Cana is the second book, beginning with his last winter before his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist, and ending with the miracle at Cana. He is surrounded by the promise of being the Christ child, complete with tales of a Virgin birth and wisdom beyond his years. Yeshua, as he is know, is carefully watch by those who attend the synagogue with him, waiting to see the path he will choose as he grows into manhood. He lives in a time of political unrest, where the Jews wait for the Messiah to free them from their Roman oppressors. We see him in this book emerging from his baptism to embrace his destiny and confront the Devil. We see him transform water in six limestone jars into wine. He is recognized by his people as the chosen one. What Rice does better than anyone before her with these tales of Christ, is to somehow follow very closely the scholarship of the New Testament, while breathing life and prospective into the young Jesus as he develops into a man. The story is told from his point of view. His thoughts and feelings are laid bare in this book. This makes this something more that an old Sunday school tale; it is an interesting and insightful study into the mind of Christ as he becomes as man. It is a powerful ‘memoir’ that is so well written, it seems real, true and believable. What’s more compelling is that where the Bible is silent on his middle, adolescent years, and years as a young man, Rice provides us with s portrait of a restless, isolated young man, who realizes to reach his potential, he must by definition give up the normal pursuits of men. Young women cannot be a part of his life. He is taken with a young beauty, Avigail. He wrestles with the desirRead full review
Christ the Lord - Road to Cana is Anne Rice's second novel imagining the life of Jesus before he began His mission of salvation. The story illustrates the humanity of Christ as well as His divinity. It is about a young man coming to grips with His destiny to fulfill the will of God as the Son of God; the Word made Flesh. It is a tender and touching story of both human and divine love. Please read this book if you believe, are still seeking faith or even if you are a non-believer. There is much to gain for all of you. Anne Rice is a wonderful writer!
I decided to buy this book beacuse I have been a long time reader of Anne Rice novels. I am very keen on Anne Rice writing about different subject matter than she usually does. I like that in this book, she humanizes Jesus so that maybe more people can relate to the tale. I was disappointed to note that she seems to have lost her flair for writing. Many critics have called her to core for using three pages of a novel to describe something. For me personally, this very thing is what I have always enjoyed reading her novels for. All in all, I was pleased with the book.
This book, Christ the Lord- The Road to Cana, arrived and it was in NEW condition. Didn't appear to even have a page turned. My husband was thrilled to be able to add this to the first 2 books.
