"Tipping the Velvet" was adapted from Sarah Waters' best-selling debut novel. It's a story set in Britain in the 1890s. Waters' focuses on the romance between Nan Astley (Rachel Stirling, incidentally the daughter of actress Diana Rigg) who is a cook in a seaside restaurant owned by her father, and Kitty Butler (Keeley Hawes), a musical hall entertainer specializing in impersonating men. Given the hypocritical moral restrictions of the Victorian era, the lesbian love relationship between Nancy and Kitty must be kept closeted except in the burgeoning British lesbian underground circles that Kitty and her liberated friends find escape and adventure through. "Tipping the Velvet" came to the US on BBC America digital-cable service beginning May 23, 2003. Next it was available online on VHS. Now it's on DVD.Read full review
It's an extraorinary piece of art, from any point of view you choose: a wonderful script; great acting; amazing directing and cinematography job, including some of the most stunning close ups and cross cuttings I've ever seen. The art, props and costumes are beautiful and detailed too, giving the movie its essential atmosphere. But the reason I loved it so much is its deep senstuality and eroticism. Sarah Waters, who wrote the novel that was the basis for this movie, is an expert in 19th century pornography, so she knows her field. Yet, it's far from being pornographic in any way - but erotic in a sense I've never seen before. Usually Lesbian sex and sensuality in movies seem unrealistic, but this time it feels so real, and so meaningful! It's not about or for men, it's about the charcters and their struggles. Totally captivating, highly recommanded!Read full review
Really love this movie. Love that it addresses lesbian love and sexuality. Plus, if you are a fan of Keeley Hawes and Jodhi May, of which I am both, then , you must watch to see their superb acting. It really gives one a lot to think about and leaves you haunted by the movie.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. By far the best lesbian themed movie ever made. Excellent performances by both Rachel Sterling and Keeley Hawes. The storyline is amazing and finale of movie has lead character having a full circle moment in her life. Where she once was a spectator in the audience, she is now the performer. Bravo! Makes me want to read the book!
Fun and entertaining coming of age movie about self worth, coming to terms with one's sexuality, and having the will to overcome many obstacles. It also is a great story about women's survival and first loves and finding someone who loves you for who you are.
