While many recorders boast 100 hours or more of recording, batteries never last that long. I've used this model of Sony recorders for 8 years and ordered a replacement when my original got dropped one too many times! Key for any recorder is the ability to download and create file directories of recordings that can be easily reviewed and organized. An as new recorder in blister pak should have a mini CD with the software and mini USB cable. However most cables will work. Sony has their own software to download from recorder to a PC (or Mac, I think). I use PCs. Audio files are a Sony DVF format (Digital Voice File). The software can "save as" to WAV or other formats so it can be used with other media players. As a wav. file it uses many more MB then the DVF file, so the compression in the Sony format is high. If run as at LP resolution, you get more time but the quality is still good enough that it's a challenge to tell it apart from the HQ setting. A nice feature is a Mic Hi / Lo sensitivity that works well. The Lo setting still gives a good recording for a group discussion at a table without excessive noise. Some recorders are cheaper, but actually lack download capability! So any recordings you have are "captive" on the recorder and can't be moved. That makes them nearly useless! So read the specs on anything you plan to buy. If a recorder specs don't mention download, then it's not offered! Therefore I avoid RCA recorders.Read full review

Great recorder for taking notes in class. Words come out very clear and crisp. A great deal for low price.
My daughter needed a voice recorder for her college classes, and I thought this would be perfect. She loves it.
