control your color temperature
Hue makes three types of bulbs: (1) those that can do any color (2) those that do shades of white from cool to warm (3) those that are only warm white and just dim. This is the second type. The color version is fun, but my primary desire for these bulbs is to have something that is cool white during the day but then is warm in the evening and can be dimmed to nightlight levels. That's what this bulb provides. It's cheaper than the color version but I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it's a good deal. The one that's just white is way cheaper, but it doesn't provide the color temperature control I like. I buy the hue switches and use them on the wall. They work well. And this works very well with IFTTT and google home. The only downside of this bulb is that's not very bright. I'd say it's closer to a 40 watt equivalent than 60. The color version can actually get quite bright. In short, this is good for a bedroom but for illuminating a large room you might want the color version. Will Phillips be sending a software upgrade soon?
Unit worked the way it was suppose to EXCEPT that it doesn't retain the memory of its last setting. I bought it for the LED "daytime" light brightness quality. I have it on a motion sensor and each time it goes on, it only goes to the middle setting. I can manually change the color of the bulb, but when it goes off, and when it turns back on with the motion sensor it goes back to the middle setting. It would be great if Phillips made a "daylight" LED bright regular bulb vs having to buy the ambiance bulb.. I read that Phillips may send out a software upgrade this year. If they do and I get my "daylight" brightness each time, I would change my rating to 5 stars. A Quality product but you're going to pay for it..a lot.
As Smart Technology goes, Philips is probably the best, but bring your wallet because you're going to pay for it. The craftsmanship is quality, the control app is very well done and the bulb color is very accurate. There are other Smart Bulb manufacturers that make a comparable product quality wise, but their control app leaves much to be desired and if you can't control the bulb, it's just a paperweight. Too bad they don't make a Smart Plug. So for me, I'll pay the price and complain about it and only give them 4 stars because of price. Great range of light, from cold-white to cozy and warm.
If you don't want to spend a ton of money in color bulbs, but still want the experience of mood-setting and controllable light, these bulbs are great for you.
