This series can be summed up in two words. Californication is simply put tragically romantic. The lead male character, Hank Moody is a lost soul, a man trying to hold it together while everything is falling apart. There are also plenty of strong female leads so that this series appeals to both sexes. And the parts are so well played that youre willing to forgive all the gratutious sex had by all. Its funny, its sad, its hopeful, its tragically romantic. It will remind one that darkness does not exist without light. Worth buying as it can be viewed more than once. Its an intelligent cross between Entourage & Sex in the City, a series that can be enjoyed by both sexes together. A real guilty pleasure to be sure.
From the first 2 minutes of episode one I was hooked! I think this was their plan all along. I have enjoyed David Duchovny's work since red shoe diaries. The scene opens to the David walking up to a church and in the background your hear "You can't always get what you want" by the Stones playing. He enters the church, puts out his smoke in the Holy Water Basin and walks up the the life sized statue of Christ on the Cross. As he begins to have a conversation with God, (Asking for Help & Guidance) he is interrupted by a beautiful Nun who says, "Maybe I can Help"? She says, "How about a blow job" stunned he looks at her and says, "Come again!" Then all of a sudden, he wakes up...and he finds the beautiful woman is not a Nun but, she is under the sheets giving him a blow job. WOW! What a way to wake up! From here on out, comedy ensues and you get that David's character is a bit of a womanizer. Anyway, like I said at the beginning, I was hooked! It is a very well written show with a great deal of clever adult humor. I recommend it highly!!! I purchased it on Ebay because I know that is the cheapest way to get anything on the web! I found someone selling it used for $15.00 and $2.00 shipping. So needless to say $17.00 beats $30.00 any day for a complete season DVD box set. So that's why I bought it!Read full review
Finally a series that does justice to the every day burdens of a semi- intelligent man! Duchovny brings sweet humanity to his rendition L.A. writer, Charles Bukowski (R.I.P.). Save the whistling sound track and the gay title (I guessing they're trying to pull in the 20 something crowd) this is THE MOST WATCHABLE SERIES ON TV RIGHT NOW (Spoiler Alert about Mad Men: In case you haven't figured it out, Mad Men is about absolutely NOTHING!) Californ-i-fucking (I mean "cation") takes out the politically correct filters and without judgment gives us the mental (sexual) anguish of the contemporary white (under 50) hipster (with Postmodern playfulness on the side). If you can't handle it or don't know when to laugh without the cue of a laugh track, watch Two and a half Men. I'm not getting paid to write this, if you want to know more click on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_realism Better yet, just see it!Read full review
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Hank Moody.. Well, what the heck are you waiting for??? This is a great series. David Duchovny stars as Hank Moody, a writer who just can't seem to get it together. And while it can get a little dramatic at times it has enough edgy humor to balance it out, and the other actors do a more than adaquate job at their own roles to make it enjoyable. This is the first season, and though I enjoyed it a great deal, it is really just setting up the rest of the series that get's better as it goes along.
