Exquisitely engineered for ease of construction, this kit is remarkably easy to build considering the incredible detail provided in its cockpit, engine and wheel bay sections. Tamiya has managed to produce a highly detailed and accurate Merlin engine with very thin engine cowling parts that are held on by small magnets and virtually snap into place - the result is a model that looks great with or without the engine revealed. The overall fit of the plastic parts is excellent, with little to no need for putty or sanding. The surface detail is exquisite, with sharp, accurate and restrained rivets, raised detail and recessed panel lines. Parts and decals are provided for a variety of aircraft options, including two types of drop tanks. Due to its complexity, this kit will take several weeks to build. Careful attention to the kit instructions are essential - for younger modellers, supervision by an experienced parent is recommended. This kit will provide a patient, experienced modeller with many hours of enjoyment. No need to recite history here....the P-51's record of accomplishment speaks for itself. It's been a personal favorite of mine for well over 40 years, ever since I saw my first Mustang at an airshow in Novato, CA. As a modeler involved in the hobby since I was nine years old, I've built nearly 500 kits,, and this was the first truly accurate Mustang kit I have ever seen. Like all of us Mustang nuts I've been waiting for this kit for a long time, and Tamiya did not disappoint me! Molded in light gray,it is a complex project that will take time and patience to build, as any good kit will. If you "commit the radical act of following the instructions" (thanks, Tom Cleaver!) you will be rewarded with an outstanding model that will sit with pride on your shelf. You can build an early block 5 type with the filletless tail, or any of the later models through the block 30 with this kit. Besides the kit decals, there are any one of a number of decal sheets available for the P-51 so one has a wide range of choices. The only thing I didn't like about the kit was the inclusion of some features designed to show the aircraft in flight, which gives the modeler the ability to replace the gear to show it retracted and then the aircraft can be placed on a stand. This smacks of toy-like gimmickry and I wish Tamiya had not done it.....it does lead a bit of compromise in accuracy. Not a killer item by any means, but one that, in my humble modeling opinion, could have been done without. The kit has so much else going for it, why muck up the works with this kind of stuff? But back to the positives.....detail is crisp (there are rivet "dimples" in the wings but they are considerably restrained compared to the awful ones in the Dragon kit)....the builder who wishes a "puttied" wing will have just a little work to do to fill them in. I used just a bit of Eduard photoetch to dress up the cockpit and I replaced the wheels and tires with examples from BarracudaCast.
