Love the picture when playing back Blue Ray discs and the surround sound audio is even better than standard DVD. My TV is a Sony LCD 32" 1080i resolution. The player is connected to the TV and audio receiver with a HDMI cable and an optical cable audio connection. Color as rich, vibrant, and the picture is the sharpest I have ever seen on a consumer television. Watching a movie with animation is spectacular! The only problems I have with the player are the set up menus and the player's delay when scrolling through scenes. There is a delay in response when the Play, FF scroll, and Stop buttons are pressed, even when playing standard DVDs. I found the many menus and set up options overwhelming plus the manuel doesn't always clearly explain what menu selections would be best for your TV when playing standard DVDs. Choosing TV aspect and the best audio setting that will play back a Blue and a standard DVD is not very clear in the manuel.Read full review
This is a significant upgrade to an old JVC analog AV receiver. It couples with a Visio HD TV, HD Satellite TV, Sony BLURAY, standard DVD player and assorted audio equipment. It has a 'Auto' mode that selects the highest quality signal, both video and audio, from each source and passes it along to the tv and speakers. I never realized how much of DirectTV broadcast is in surround sound! The manual is not clear or detailed, but I've been able to make most things function without too much frustration. When listening to music, it is noise free and very powerful, I rarely can use the volume above about 25%. The remote is full featured, and programable. To take advantage of the fully digital features and Auto mode, be sure to connect it using HDMI cables, and added expense, but well worth the cost. I did weeks of research when I decided to upgrade my AV Receiver, and this Sony model was my first choice. I found a very good deal on eBay, although even at list price, it offers a good value.Read full review
The BDP-BX1 is the same as the BDP-S350, but it comes with and HDMI cable. I like this player. It upsizes standard DVDs just as will as my Toshiba HD-DVD player did, and looks great with Blu-Rays. Boot time and loading time are better than expected. It does remember where I left off with a standard DVD; Blu-Ray doesn't support this feature, but you can create a bookmark to come back to. Note - you have to get a USB flash drive to stick in the back to do this and access some special features. I used a standard Sandisk 4 GB and it works fine. The only things I don't like are the lack of frame by frame and slow on the playback. Maybe the S550 has this, but not worth the extra money. Sound into my Onkyo TX-SR605 via HDMI is outstanding - the reciever correctly identifies Dolby HD Master. Note - you might have to reprogram the reciever to 'auto' instead of 'last good' for the DVD input. Overall I love it, especially for the price.Read full review
I like the compactness of the unit and the clarity of the picture is remarkable. The features are numerous and I have not researched them all yet, but hope to before long. I decided to buy it because of other reviews I had read and because of the Sony reputation. So far, it is living up to all I expected. The D.V.D. player I had been using was not Blu-Ray so it really is like comparing oranges to apples. Needless to say, the picture is much better with the Sony.
Unlike most current dvd/blu ray players, this one is stylish, has a front display, and has jacks on the rear, overall a excellent player.

I'm very pleased with the BDP-S350 player. It is a vast improvement over the S300 model previously owned. One of the best changes is that the player can be set to warm up quickly. The early blu-ray players would take well over a minute after powering on to be ready to go. This player also has the ability to download movies from the internet. You can add memory keys to the back of the unit to store content. This feature will be increasingly useful. My only complaint is that you have to be diligent about upgrading the firmware. These units are like little computers, only worse, because the upgrades don't occur automatically. If you hook your unit to the web you can download firmware upgrades directly. If you don't hook to the web you need to periodically check the Sony website to see if there is an upgrade for your unit. If there is you can either request that a cd be mailed to you (preferred method but takes a couple of weeks) or you can try to burn your own upgrade cd. It's important to install these upgrades, as old firmware can affect cause operational problems or even failure to read a dvd. There is a little hard disk inside the unit which can fail trying unsuccessfully to read a dvd. I know because it happened to my S300, costing me $200 or so to repair with Sony (just after their one year warranty expired.) Why Sony doesn't emphasize this more is beyond me, almost scandalous.Read full review
The size is small, so that makes it great. The hookups on the back are great for me as i, have an HDMI 7.1 Receiver and they are a match. Plays even my older DVDs, and enhances the video quality. Ofcourse watching Bluerays on this unit, are AMAZING !There is nothing that i do not dislike about this Sony BlueRay Player. The price was even more amazing. So overall, i would recommend this unit to those with updated surround sounds system receivers with HDMI inputs and outputs. Ths setup is quite easy. Enjoy !
I like Sony video and electronics, this unit was hotly bid upon, and everything I read about the unit stated it was top-notch with Sony's typical advanced features. I've played a number of movies on it, and it works great with my 2 Sony HD 1080P LCD flat screen tv's. The quality of picture is outstanding. I can't say much about the audio, as I don't have a high-end home-theatre setup, but if it's half as good as the video, I'm sure it would be awesome. marcb05@cox.net -yoda2486
"Santa" brought my family the Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray disc player and a 40" 1080p Sony Bravia T.V. While we are working on our blu-ray disc collection, the player has been wonderful. the picture is outstanding and the function is easy enough for my 5-year old to operate it with no problem. It plays all our old discs with no problem. If you have a 1080p television you owe it to your self to purchase this player(very reasonably priced) and The Planet Earth DVD set from Discovery Channel. It make a great family night.
We bought the Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray Player as a present to ourselves and couldn't be happier! Not being savvy electronics' experts, we were afraid it would be difficult to hook-up. It was a piece of cake! The functions are easy to figure out and the sleek look of the player is a nice extra. The ability to play regular DVDs is an added plus for us, since we have more of them than Blu-Ray discs at the moment. It's very slim and doesn't take up a lot of space. It's definitely easy to use. The picture quality is out of this world. Over a month later and we're still oooohing and ahhhhing over it. The price was more than reasonable, especially compared to other players. We would recommend this player to anyone who is going for great quality at an inexpensive price.
