A little back story... WWE decided that they had to do something to fill their 24 hour wrestling channel, so they wrote out a series where legends of the business would get together and talk about other wrestling legends in the business. For this series, they picked some wrestling legends from the 1980's. These three disks are 3 one hour long episodes on each disk plus different matches featuring the wrestlers that are being talked about. In these disks, you have 4 legends(Sgt. Slaughter, Ric Flair, the JYD, and Jerry the King Lawler). Then on the 3rd disk of the series, you have a special edition talking about "heatseekers" or those people with a reputation of being difficult to get along with backstage. For those who like hearing other legends in the business talk about their peers, this is a great series. The matches themselves are never "5 star" matches, but some of them are pretty good to see. I have been following wrestling from the late 1980's and I had even forgotten that some of these matches had taken place. As a for instance, I had completely forgotten about Michael Hayes' feud with Lex Luger but they had a really good US Title match between the two. Note that not all of the matches are from the 80's, these are just discussions about people who were drawing stars in the 80's. If you are into these sort of discussions and watching some classic matches from a bygone(and not so bygone) era, then these disks are for you. Some matches in the collection include(this is not a complete list): The "kiss my foot match" between Bret "The Hitman" Hart and Jerry Lawler JYD vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage Texas Deach Match between Bob Backlund and Sgt. Slaughter Ric Flair vs. Curt Hennig from WCW Nitro The aforementioned Michael Hayes vs. Lex Luger Scott Hall vs. Bill Goldberg from the Monday Nitro where Goldberg won the title.Read full review
This DVD's panel includes Jim Ross as always, along with Dusty Rhodes, Pat Patterson, Michael Hayes, Mike Graham, Mick Foley, Eric Bischoff and Lawler. Stories of Jerry Lawler are in my opinion kinda cool. My favorite story is from Michael Hayes about during a match with Lawler, Hayes crapped his pants on LIVE Television. There are stories of Lawler's angle with the late Andy Kauffman, what makes him a Legend (especially in Memphis), the AWA Superclash III event, his feud with Bret Hart that including some REALLY great promos in which Lawler just runs down the entire Hart family. Really mean things like "when you're mother gave birth to you, the Doctor slapped your mother!!" and more.Lawler had MAJOR heat in Canada!!! JR also talks about how much he loves doing play-by-play with him and even Lawler's artistic ability. Junkyard Dog is one of my favorite wrestlers EVER. If you badmouthed JYD around me, you would have big problems. The JYD portion of the DVD starts with "Big Cat" Ernie Ladd (R.I.P.) inducting JYD into the Hall of Fame. The story of JYD deserves much more than just this round table discusiion. I'd love to see a DVD for JYD. But this will have to do. Stories of JYD include being a man of color becoming a top star in a time when promotors were for the most part very racist. As was a good part of America back in the 70s. Stories about JYD being legitimately blinded in a match and not being able to see the birth of his child, overseas tours, wrestling in the South, Michael Hayes gives a story of how the Freebirds were several times attacked by fans and even someone in the arena with a gun and a bullet with the word "Freebirds" engraved on it. It's scary to think people are capable of doing these things, but it's an example of how loved JYD really was. Many more great stories from Dusty, and footage of JYD in Mid South, WWF and even ECW. Rest in Peace!! Ric Flair's portion of the DVD has several stories, but not much new if you've seen the other Ric Flair DVDs. I do enjoy the round table discussion about him though because it's shoot style story telling. It does get little heated between Hayes, Dusty and Graham. But just a little, then it's right back to friendly conversation. I don't know why Patterson is here. Like the last DVD he doesn't say much of anything. Anyway... Sgt. Slaughter's portion of the DVD great for someone like me who grew up with Sarge, seeing him in WWF and then watching GI Joe on Saturday mornings and seeing him as a cartoon, getting his action figure you name it. Sarge will probably never get his own DVD which is the fate of many Legends who will never get the respect they deserve. So this is most likely the only DVD that Sarge's fans will get. It's good. It's not a documentary like Flair or Dusty have, but it is still good. Lots of great stories about getting into wrestling, AWA, WWF all the way up to Sarge being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Unfortunately Sarge was released by WWE in mid 2009. Heatseekers is my favorite of the set. It's a no holds barred slug fest between all 5 of these guys, and their opinions on guys who are known for beeing snitches, cry babies, complainers and troublemakers. Mick Foley has a HILARIOUS story about why he has heat with Goldberg. I laughed really hard!!! The arguing between the panel members alone is worth the price of this DVD. All kinds of stories of Luger, Hall & Nash, Russo, McMahon, Heyman, Buff Bagwell & more!!Read full review
This is a Box set that has three DVDS that cover wrestling personalities from the 1980's-early '90s. The people covered are Jerry Lawler, JYD, Ric Flair, Sgt. Slaughter, and some minor controvertial guys like Luger, Heyman. and Scott Hall. The discs are seperated into panel discussions and some old matches that feature the guys discussed.
Am a huge fan of oldschool wrestling and hearing guys "shoot" about the goings on was great. Buy this dvd and if you're a fan of 80's and 90's wrestling you wont regret it.
